Jared Huffman (D-CA) said that if bishops ‘rebuke’ Democrats for violating Church teaching on abortion, ‘a ‘rebuke’ of [the Church’s] tax-exempt status may be in order.’
June 24, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — A Democratic congressman from California suggested that the Catholic Church ought to lose its tax-exempt status if the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) decides to follow Church law and deny Communion to pro-abortion politicians like President Joe Biden.
In a June 18 tweet, Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA) said, “If they’re going to politically weaponize religion by ‘rebuking’ Democrats who support women’s reproductive choice, then a ‘rebuke’ of their tax-exempt status may be in order.”
Huffman, who serves on a variety of caucuses — including the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Equality Caucus and the House Pro-Choice Caucus — raised eyebrows several weeks ago when he announced that attendees of this year’s first in-person townhall in his district would be required to show proof of vaccination while unvaccinated members would be relegated to attending online.
The congressman’s tweet threatening retaliation against the Catholic Church came in connection to a “Statement of Principles” put out on the same day by 60 “Catholic Democrats in Congress,” in response to the USCCB’s June 2021 meeting.

Boy. These commies are cruisin for a brusin.
The best thing that could happen to the Church is to lose tax-exempt status.
Nothing to lose by living up to the faith after that.
It’s not political. I’m sure there are some republican Catholics who shouldn’t receive communion as well.
Churches should lose their tax exempt status for promoting and sheltering illegal immigrants.
Historically, threatening the Pope and church has not been a good idea
I wonder how many people realize denying someone Holy Communion, in Catholicism, isn’t a punishment, it’s to protect that person.
So... if there is no separation of church and state. Can we have school led prayer again?
Sounds like a threat to me! Where is the DOJ?
“Boy. These commies are cruisin for a brusin”
Really upping the stakes, aren’t they?
They’re not rebuking them, they are trying to save their souls. Just about anyone who believes in any kind of communion knows that one is risking Hell to take communion with sin unredeemed.
Too bad it is in the Constitution, eh?
Church should lose the Tax Exempt status for supporting abortions. What’s the difference?
I’m not Catholic but I always assumed it was to teach someone and I agree it’s to protect that persons soul. That is the duty of a priest.
Same view in the Baptist church where I attend. If, during the Lord’s Supper, one has any “unfinished business” i.e. unconfessed sin, one should refrain from partaking the elements.
It is also to protect the soul of the priest.
If the priest is aware that the person seeking communion is in grave persistent sin, the priest would be committing a grave sin be serving that person communion.
I don’t understand the bishops and priest that insist on serving these Catholic in name only Democrats communion. They are endangering their own souls.
Denying communion to anyone is part of the spiritual discipline of the church. A prayer before communion used in Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches says this:
May the communion of Thy Holy Mysteries be neither to my judgment, nor to my condemnation, O Lord, but to the healing of soul and body. Amen.
And, following I Corinthians 11:29
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
The church exercises this discipline for the good of the church member and does so for a variety of reasons. It’s an unfortunate coincidence that the discipline in this case happens to run headlong into a sacrament of both the religious and secular left — abortion.
If the church is free to exercise this discipline in other cases, why can’t it exercise it in regard to politicians who support and promote the grave sin of abortion?
We already do. But it’s not the old fashioned prayer to God.
Agreed. Somebody should explain it to them. Not that they really care about a real relationship with God.
Nobody is forced to be Catholic. If one does not like their doctrines one can join another church. I personally do not want to dress up as a woman and sing and dance on stage. But you won’t see me complaining that some drag queen club won’t consider me a member.
