Catholic House Democrats Prepare to Send Bishops ‘Statement of Principles’ on Communion Vote

The vote alone will likely have implications for both the American church and President Joe Biden, a Catholic.

WASHINGTON (RNS) — A group of Catholic Democrats in the House of Representatives is preparing a “statement of principles” to be released after a planned vote Thursday (June 17) by the American Catholic bishops on a proposal to draft a document on the Eucharist that taps into ongoing debate regarding Communion and politicians who back abortion rights.

A representative for U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Connecticut Democrat, confirmed the document exists and is forthcoming but did not offer details as to its content or signers.

The document comes amid ongoing debate over whether bishops should deny the Eucharist to elected officials who support abortion rights legislation. The bishops are scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to create a document on “Eucharistic coherence,” which may touch on the issue of Communion bans.

The scope of the document remains to be seen, and the USCCB can’t force any individual bishop to deny anyone Communion — each bishop has the power to decide that for his own diocese.

That letter will contain some garbage about how these “Catholics” are merely voting the desires of their constituents.

Everything America once stood for[represented] has died. Only the geographic area that encompasses America remains. And yes, the people will continue to go about their daily activities as nothing out of the ordinary happened.

How dare they! As if it’s not already bad enough that our bishops have no spine. The chutzpah these so-called Catholics in Congress exhibit is vomit producing.

Amazing. So now the Dems are giving orders to the Church as well. And the Church authorities will no doubt accept their orders gladly.

They aren’t vaunting “separation of church and state” now.

Federal officials shouldn’t be advising religious bodies about doctrine and practice.

The USCCB should say “Thanks, now you’re on notice as well.”

Rosa is one of the most extreme abortion zealots on earth. She is also (so she boasts) a “faithful” Catholic. It is truly evil that no bishop has stood up against her.

I am wondering if they will force Catholic to give communion to Muslims and anybody else.
Outlawing “Communion discriminations” and “Muslim ban”?

I could easily see DeLauro as the Director of Religious Ed or strumming a guitar to some atrocious post-V2 hymn at any modernist parish.

Oh, I think it’ll go way beyond that. These turkeys really think they have the moral high ground. They’ll likely make a statement along that they as Catholics, with fully formed consciences and consistent with the theology of Pope Francis, respect the rights of women to make their own reproductive decisions... and are at peace with legal abortion is a moral choice in a pluralistic society, blah blah blah.

That letter will contain some garbage about how these “Catholics” are merely voting the desires of their constituents.

Their explanation excuse will be that, though they are "personally" opposed to abortion, they cannot force their religious views on others.

This argument/rationalization doesn't hold water with any other kind of issue such as slavery, "I'm personally opposed to slavery but I won't impose my religious beliefs on others.", won't fly anymore.

Support, votes, power and money are more important to such people than their values. When they don't really have deeply held beliefs, anything can be justified. I just wish the Vatican recognized the devastating and destructive scandal this will cause to ALL Catholics.
