It’s so interesting that you chose to post here and now. My ex-husband, a navy vet, is lying dying in a hospital right now from yet another stroke.
He is not likely to survive this time. He had two strokes in quick succession three years ago that actually did kill him but they brought him back to life. I was there with his daughter (from his first marriage) through some long, difficult weeks of recovery at the hospital. At that time he still had not submitted and would not submit to Jesus.

It’s more than just atrocities, or wars or natural disasters.
Nobody is making it all about only one sign. All of those things have happened before, true, but the key is Israel, and its restoration as a nation, which we have now seen, along with the recognition of Jerusalem as its capitol.
This sets the stage in which all other prophecies can be interpreted.

The wages we see our a result of sin in this world... we either turn to Him and follow Him... or we follow man...
The evil you see is of man’s making... not His.
We are not slaves... we either choose His path or face the consequences of man’s failings.
He told us there will be suffering in this world... but He gave us a free gift to depart from it...
What we see today is a result of the evil in man’s heart.. but His love is displayed by taking the price for the wages if our sin... and giving us a way out...

What you ask is a serious question - there have been far worse things that have happened over the previous millenia.
Though to be fair, if God prevented various atrocities, we could ask why not prevent personal tragedies. Then it does become that we need to be prevented from every free will act.
So I think it goes that we have the free will to do evil and the alternative is that we are robots. that’s just my opinion
