ROME — In a documentary that premiered Wednesday in Rome, Pope Francis called for the passage of civil union laws for same-sex couples, departing from the position of the Vatican’s doctrinal office and the pope’s predecessors on the issue.
The remarks came amid a portion of the documentary that reflected on pastoral care for those who identify as LGBT.
“Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it,” Pope Francis said in the film, of his approach to pastoral care.
After those remarks, and in comments likely to spark controversy among Catholics, Pope Francis weighed in directly on the issue of civil unions for same-sex couples.
“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered,” the pope said. “I stood up for that.”

Not my Pope. As a Catholic, apparently in name only, I object to our homosexual-loving pope’s destruction of the church.
No one should be miserable, and we are all sinners.
That said, it is strange that a man who supposedly spent his life studying God’s Word, and was elected by men of his church to apply it, should have no idea of the concept of God’s idea of family as He created it.
Yes we all do want acceptance, and told we're good, and that people like us.... but that is not what the spiritual purpose of the Church Christ left us with is for. That thinking diminishes the Church into just some kind of club for like-minded people. If that's all it is then- to hell with it.
The Pope has his wires crossed. Yes, his job is to be a light, to bring all people to the Altar of Christ in the Church- but those people must become repentant sinners or there is no other reason for the Church then. Yes we must love the sinner, and yet we still must hate the sin. Compromising that core belief eliminates any need of repentance.

God has given us everything we need to be good. The choice has always been OURS to make.
