Fourteen soldiers killed in jihadist attack (Nigeria)

ISIS fighters launched an assault on a military base in the northeast of the country on Saturday. Several soldiers are also missing.

Jihadists linked to the Islamic State (IS) organization killed 14 Nigerian soldiers in an attack on a military base in the northeast of the country, military sources said on Saturday. Several soldiers are missing.

Two sources, who requested anonymity, told AFP that fighters from the Islamic State in West Africa (Iswap) group attacked the Jakana military base on Friday with machine guns and grenade launchers, a offensive followed by intense fighting.

"We lost 14 soldiers in the battle, including the officer in charge and another officer," said one source. Several soldiers are missing, said a second source, who gave an identical death toll. Four trucks loaded with machine guns were stolen in the attack.

Jakana is 25 km from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, the epicenter of the jihadist insurgency in Nigeria. It is at the intersection of a strategic road for Iswap fighters, connecting their camps in Benisheikh forest and their haunts in Buni Yadi, Yobe region.

The village and the military base there have been the target of numerous attacks by the group, which emerged from a split from Boko Haram. The Nigerian military began a massive search operation on Monday in an area including Jakana.

The Islamist insurgency developed in northeastern Nigeria from 2009, before spreading to neighboring countries, Cameroon, Niger and Chad. Since that date, more than 36,000 people (mainly in Nigeria) have been killed, and three million have had to flee their homes, according to the UN.

Further west, three villagers were killed and five children between the ages of three and fifteen abducted by Boko Haram fighters in the far north of Cameroon. The attack took place on the night of Thursday to Friday in the village of Oudal, 6 km from the border with Nigeria, Boukar Medjeweh, the mayor of Mayo-Moskota, a village to which Oudal is attached, told AFP on Saturday (google translate)

Why doesn’t the story tell us how many jihadists were killed.

How much do they have *left*? :^) IMHO it's no coincidence that Erdgoan's gone in up to the eyeballs on African jihad and now this.
