BY NOW, YOU MIGHT BE GETTING THE IDEA
that I must really like the book of Ruth. I LOVE the book of Ruth! If I could find 200 pictures appropriately illustrating this wonderful story, I would post every single one.Well, I didn’t find 200—I found 217, displayed here and on 6 other separate posts. If you’re not yet in love with this tale, too, my hope is you soon will be!

1 Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a man of standing whose name was Boaz.
2 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.”
Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.” 3 So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz.
4 Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, “The Lord be with you!”
“The Lord bless you!” they answered.
5 Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters, “Who does that young woman belong to?”
6 The overseer replied, “She is the Moabite who came back from Moab with Naomi. 7 She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.’ She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.”
8 So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. 9 Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.”
10 At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me—a foreigner?”
11 Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. 12 May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
13 “May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord,” she said. “You have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant—though I do not have the standing of one of your servants.”
14 At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.”
When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over. 15 As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. 16 Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.”
17 So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered. 18 She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.
19 Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!”
Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said.
20 “The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.”
21 Then Ruth the Moabite said, “He even said to me, ‘Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’”
22 Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.”
23 So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA Q u a l i t y The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not “Great Paintings” nor even “Good Paintings.” So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don’t need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby’s. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.P a c i n g The pace may seem glacial to those eager to see their favorite events. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence; if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic. But where there is no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing. Always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!
But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is coming soon. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year’s viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: “Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast.” Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet access—best 35 bucks I’ve ever spent (I don’t recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 42 years ago).

In Jamaica, if you have a fruit tree in your FRONT yard, ANYBODY is allowed to come and pick it’s fruit, no questions asked....................
I am amused by how artists dress the people in their paintings in whatever clothing is in style at the time of the painting's creation..................

Never occurred to me Ruth was overtly sexy.
As to the clothing: like you, it amuses me, too. My supposition is, without photography and the internet, they had limited knowledge about ancient foreign customs and just painted what they knew contemporaneously and locally.
The text certainly neither states nor implies it. Sex sells. In post #87 in fives days I’ve collected all the stained glass and sculptures, and two of the well-attributed statues show her topless. At first I omitted them, but finally I relented and decided to let the viewers judge for themselves. But, I may yet change my mind again....
Verrrry interrrrrresting! I was grabbed by pictures 2, 10 and 15, just because of the apparent lack of discernment and/or decorum of the artists. Number 2 with a breast peeking out from the folds of her robe. Number 10, which is very lovely, except for her see-through blouse; which I don’t think existed in those days. And number 15, with her robe actually undone and standing open suggestively. If I left myself go, I could be as boorish and salacious as the next guy. But I do not believe the subject matter in this instance should lead the observer off in a risque’ direction. FWIW.

Me Too. And i had a VERY POPULAR Mango Tree in my front yard. LOL.
I have tangerine trees and orange and lemon trees just now starting to bear.
I also have a ‘bitter orange’ tree by the road that people have picked from, but not more than once. The fruit is so sour that it makes a lemon taste sweet. They leave my other trees alone....................
My neighbor had a fig tree that poked through the fence.
Anything on MY side of the fence was fair game. LOL!
I have three fig trees, but have to be quick to harvest any, else the squirrels, birds and rats get them!
The thing about the bitter orange is they look great, they even smell great, but bite into one and it’s so sour your eyeballs will shrink back into your head!..................
That’ll show ‘em! :-)
