The Medieval Carpentry Techniques Used in Notre Dame Cathedral Rebuild

CNA Staff, Sep 23, 2020 / 12:00 am MT (CNA).- After fire toppled the iconic spire and destroyed the roof of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France in April 2009, heated debates ensued about whether the reconstruction should use the church’s original design, or use a more modern design and technique.

Some proposed futuristic ideas included a rooftop swimming pool and a greenhouse atop the 850-year-old cathedral.

Last year, the French Senate passed a bill mandating that Notre-Dame be rebuilt as it was before the fire, with lumber and medieval carpentry techniques, which were highlighted in a public demonstration Saturday in the cathedral’s square.

“It shows…firstly that we made the right choice in choosing to rebuild the carpentry identically, in oak from France,” Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin, who heads the reconstruction efforts, told the AP.

“Secondly, it shows us the...method by which we will rebuild the framework, truss after truss.”

The public carpentry demonstration was held Sept. 19 as part of European Heritage Days. The triangular truss highlighted at the event was the seventh of a total of 25 new trusses that will be installed in the nave of the cathedral during the rebuild.

Carpenters told the AP that they selected a truss with a more complex design for the event. The truss, built in July, was raised from the ground for display at the event using a pulley system. Once raised, a celebratory oak branch was tied to the top, a traditional “symbol of prosperity and a salute to the workers,” according to the AP.

“It’s a moment to see ancestral techniques that last. There is the present and the past and it links us to our roots,” Romain Greif, an architect attending the event with his family told the AP. “It’s an event.”

The trusses will......

It wasn't April, 2009, it was April, 2019. What the hell is wrong with these journalists?

I’m relieved that they’re rebuilding it. I had heard that there were plans to make the site a parking lot or a swimming pool.

If it was in this country, BLM would just finish burning it down.

It's pretty much guaranteed there are. Muslims in France fill a similar role to Mexicans in the U.S., they do most of the manual labor.

Considering that the place is eight and a half centuries old, close on a percentage basis, though...

There is a reason for journalism majors being even beneath education majors in colleges. That’s why they have “special schools”.

I was reading somewhere that rebuilding the roof would consume a significant fraction of all of the available oak trees in Europe.

“I was reading somewhere that rebuilding the roof would consume a significant fraction of all of the available oak trees in Europe.”

I don’t think so. It sounds like something a green party source would say, someone opposed to the rebuild and to the church.

The foresters 200 years ago planted trees and were prepared for this moment.

This is what went into providing oak for casks for French Wine.

My wife and I visited Paris in July (normally an insane idea due to tourist crowds, but there were few crowds this year) the worksite at Notre Dame is very impressive, they have covered the security fence with a systematic explanation of the restoration and repair process.

Over the past year, the crew has painstakingly reinforced the structure so that they don’t further damage the building as they remove the non-repairable portions. Now they are slowly removing the those portions and beginning the repairs.

It is a very impressive process, it is clear that the French consider this a national priority.

If the news stories covering the aftermath remain correct, significant donations were pledge from many sources PREDICATED on a historical rebuild like we are seeing here. The LEFT in France, very strong, were the ones putting forward 'alternative uses' and they remain muttering in their beards!
