NEW YORK - President Donald Trump identified himself as the best [president] in the history of the Catholic Church in a conference call for Catholic leaders and educators Saturday, where he warned that issues at stake in the upcoming presidential election, particularly on abortion and religious liberty, have never been more important for the Church.
Trump also pledged support for Catholic schools in light of the global coronavirus pandemic.
In an audio recording of the meeting obtained by Crux, the president repeatedly emphasized his support for the pro-life movement and school choice, attempting to paint a stark contrast between his administration and what a Democratic presidency could mean for Catholics.
Crux was told by two participants that over 600 people were on the call, including Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, Cardinal Sean OMalley of Boston, Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles and president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Bishop Michael C. Barber of Oakland, chair of the USCCB Committee of Catholic Education, as well as the superintendents of Catholic schools for Los Angeles and Denver, among others.
In his opening remarks, the president noted that he was joined on the call by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and Secretary of Housing and Education Ben Carson.

Well, he is positive. More positive than most of our bishops.
Better than the Pope, but the Pope has a cooler hat.
Best is a big claim, but I guess that depends how one does measuring. He’s no Reagan, but this ain’t the 80’s, and Francis is no JP II. To the extent that the laity are going to get support, it seems more likely to come from unconventional places.
That said, Trump’s what Providence has dealt us for this part of the rodeo, and I trust that he’ll do.
the Pope has a cooler hat.
But, as they’d say in Texas, he doesn’t seem to have any cattle.
Before Paul VI Pope’s had even bigger hats and, in practice, lots more cattle.
Still, George likes the hats..

And...
And more bling.
President Trump may be better for the church than Frankie.
You gotta have bling, unless you’re me
St Peters Basilica, talk about bling! and 40 foot walls!
Been there
Damn the luck that made some of us BWB (Brilliant Without Bling). I’m not one of them, unfortunately. :-)
Better than Reagan?
I think Melania is very sympathetic to the Church. I’m not ready to say that Trump is the best President for the Church (Reagan re-established diplomatic relations with the Vatican, for instance), but I am confident that Melania is the best First Lady for the Church.
No, he's not. Trump, you see, actually attended the Right to Life March; he was the first president to ever do this.
Reagan made phone calls to it.
Trump is the most pro-life president this country has had since the infamous Roe v. Wade decision in 1973; whether legalized abortion is a pressing concern to the Catholic hierarchy in this country, however, is an open question.
Especially since she is a Catholic hailing from Eastern Europe.
Except they ain’t meeting anymore. Covid lockdown ya know.
Except he pretty much wiped out their billions in refugee resettlement funds, which is exactly why Pope Francis went to the Mexico border to exclaim Christians dont build walls.
“Im not ready to say that Trump is the best President for the Church”
Good. He isn’t a President “for the [Catholic] Church” but as he said Hes Best President in History of the Church
(Let’s just assume that when church is CAPITOLIZED that refers to the Catholic church/denomination)
He’s President for the United States of America.
And he is a Christian, but not a Catholic.
“When I drink my little wine — which is about the only wine I drink — and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness, and I do that as often as possible because I feel cleansed,” he said. “I think in terms of ‘let’s go on and let’s make it right.’”
