The almighty dollar has transformed former churches around Greater Boston into everything from condos to a Dollar Tree store.
The Archdiocese of Boston has closed more than 70 former houses of worship since 2004, and in that time, buyers have moved in. But it’s a transformation that’s come with a lot of criticism.
“If you stand back and take a broad view, here you have one of the strongest Catholic dioceses in the United States, created back in the 1800s when America was still very new. It is in full retreat,” said Peter Borre, chairman of the Boston-based Council of Parishes, a lay group that battles Catholic parish closures.
On Vine Street in Charlestown, the large brick church that once housed St. Catherine’s of Siena now operates as a Dollar Tree. A bright green banner and enclosed entrance have been tacked onto the structure just below its enormous stained glass window and bell tower.
“It looks kind of ugly,” said Charlestown resident William Senuta. “It’s sad. It’s just sad, because things change. Less people are going to church.”
The archdiocese has sold off many other historic churches to developers looking for prime property to build swanky, high-end condos.
In Bay Village, Our Lady of Victories Church and rectory were sold for $11.4 million in 2017, records show. The building, now coined “The Marc,” has three-bedroom condos listed for $3.47 million apiece. A two-bedroom goes for $2.3 million.

Don’t rape boys.
This is happening all across the country because homosexuals took over the churches.
In my area several former big box style stores have been taken over and converted into churches. These churches appear to be mostly non-mainline, non-denominational independent type organizations.
I took a chance and went to a bible study recently. One couple mentioned going to a wedding of Palestinian friends. And how there are “two sides to every story”. I can’t stop thinking about that terribly naive comment. And everyone saying Jesus was homeless, etc. I saw where that was going.
The people seems really nice and I really wish I had someone to talk to sometimes. But there is a reason I am standoffish. My last friends were militant proabortion and prosuicide. Sheesh. Hard to find like minded life and freedom loving people sometimes.
Maybe need to look instead if we have a real pub around, laf.
There is a church here that took over an entire shopping center.
As long as they’re not being turned into mosques, I’m fine with this.
The non-denominational church I am now going to is in a shopping mall and used to be a Tower Records.
There are none at the churches I attend.
The Catholic seminaries now give the men who want to be priests tests regarding their psychological fitness for the priesthood.
Police departments have psychological testing for those who want to be cops. They also have I.Q. testing.
Maybe the smaller cities and towns don't do that yet but it sure does weed out those who aren't fit to be priests or cops. Maybe your town has a majority of homosexuals living there and if that's the case you COULD move if you don't care for them.
That's depressing.
Check out all the rainbow flags at almost all mainline Protestant churches now. That means homosexuals now control that church.
How sad.
Well, you can blame it on Father Martin Luther for the beginning of the Protestant Reformation and you can blame Henry VIII and Ann Boleyn for causing the death of SO many Catholics and priests and for making the King or Queen of England and HEAD OF THE CHURCH there.
Imagine that, the Queen is the head of their church.
Why do the Protestant churches have so many homosexuals where you live? Does your town have THAT many homosexuals? The big WHY.
Yep, many around here with the pride flags. The irony is they are a tiny minority but seem to be calling all the shots
Neighborhoods do change. You might give yourself some time to wait them out.

You might also start something by getting people to put out USA and your state flag. Show them with a VENGEANCE!
If you were Catholic I would suggest adding the papal flag. Wouldn't they LOVE that? NOT!!
You don’t know how to spot them. In the many RCC Churches and schools I attended in several large cities and suburbs over the years, a disproportionate number of the men were a little “light in the loafers.”
I don't know how to spot homosexuals and I don't care. What they do is their business but I DO know that they WERE brought up to believe that homosexual behavior is a sin and someday they will come face to face with their Maker.
God created Lucifer and KNEW that Lucifer would turn into Satan.
Jesus chose Judas Iscariot as one of His Apostles and Jesus KNEW that Judas would betray Him.
I don't question our Lord's motives. I just pray to Him and offer Mass and prayers for:
--His praise, honor and glory;
--gratitude for all the blessings He has given me;
--forgiveness, reparations and healing of my sins
--the grace to be a better, more compassionate daughter to Him and to the world.
Cities and states LEGALIZING same-sex "marriages" doesn't make them right or moral...just legal.
Politicians ought to realize that if they get into power they will still have to justify their behavior before God someday.

The only lifestyle that is not included in the alphabet group these days is monogamous binary “cisgender” heterosexuals. They are exclusive, not inclusive of all peoples.
Here an independent church was a Chevy dealership. The service bays are the youth area and the TV studios. One Southern Baptist Church took over a defunct mall, another took over an Albertsons Supermarket. The Catholic Church is dying because of priests raping boys, but Churches are thriving...
