Rev. Anna Blaedel, an openly gay United Methodist chaplain at the University of Iowa and “theologian-in-residence” with Enfleshed, gave the invocation in the Iowa Senate chambers on Thursday morning.
She was invited to give the opening prayer by Senate Minority Leader Janet Petersen, D-Des Moines, and to call her prayer controversial would be an understatement.
Caffeinated Thoughts readers may remember that Blaedel was required to take unpaid leave over a settlement with the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church after being accused of violating church doctrine by being a “self-avowed, practicing homosexual.”

Iowa has always been a weird State.
Iowa, like America, is schizophrenic. Half the population is normal, conservative, and would admit to faith in God. The other half are ecstatic baby body part sales supporting LGBTQI nutcases. They live among us like body snatchers who, when they find out you are conservative, go into screaming conniption fits in order to force you into their mold, or find a way to destroy you. This is America 2020
I had a humorous memory reading her invocation. Back to the days of Darryl Royal at Texas. At the start of each Cotton Bowl there would be an invocation by a Baptist or Methosist minister. Each year the invocations came down to “ Dear Lord, let Texas win. Amen”
Ha, ha, I’m not surprised, especially since I’m an OU and Texas Aggies fan.
I agree. We have only lived here about 3 1/2 years, and it is a weird state. The western half tends to be more conservative and the eastern half more liberal. Des Moines is right in the middle, so it’s really schizo. Having moved here from OK, I can’t get used to their squidgy niceness. Blecchhh

My parents were from Iowa, and I visited all the time growing up.
We moved here because our daughter did. I’m not sure how many more of these horrible winters I can stand, though.
The first time I went up to Iowa in the Winter was when my Grandma died. It was cold, everything was either brown or black, the sun rose at 7:30 and set a 4:30....and it made me realize why some farmers axe-murder their families.
After my dad retired from the Marines, the last thing he wanted to do was go back to Iowa. When he was growing up, he had to punch holes in the ice for the cattle to drink, before he went to school.

Ha, ha, yes! We have snow and I’ve been sick with bronchitis, so I haven’t been out of the house except to go to the doctor and pick up a prescription since January 3rd. It is really depressing. I’m too old for this.
