I agree with this site and the Preacher on The Simpson's. Don't very much care for Rock and or Roll music in Church. Pass the Hymn book please.

I don’t like church services that feature praise music. The music is usually flat, lacks depth of wisdom, and there’s usually only two stanzas (max) that are repeated as well as the refrain. It’s boring. I attended our praise worship service on Sunday because of a planned outing later in the morning and found the music tedious.

I agree.

BUT there are some pretty good modern hymns out there as well.

I know God doesn’t sleep but you have to wonder if He ever nods off during these “praise” songs...

Not a LOT of good modern hymns written to be sung by regular people.

There are a few modern hymns that I like (circa early to mid-twentieth c.) but when we sing hymns in church, I like to read who the author is, when they lived, and who wrote the music. I’m out of step with half of my church regarding the music, and I’m probably seen as a stick-in-the-mud even by the pastor.

But when I think about the millions (maybe billions) of people who’ve sung the song I’m singing in church and know that I’m joined by the angels and saints in heaven in lifting up my out-of-tune voice and singing my Lord’s praises, I’m humbled right down to the soles of my shoes. I don’t feel that way with modern praise music.

Ha! Good one. I wonder if He thinks, “If only they’d let me inspire the lyrics and music . . . “

I commented to my pastor how the songs can get repitious.

“They are supposed to be.”

“Huh?”

“You know how when you were a kid and you spoke the same lines over and over again in a chant in response to the pastor?”

“Yeah - that was boring too!”

“Well, repetion is part of worship. You’re supposed to just focus on the feelings and thoughts that the repition brings up - and the many aspects of the word. So like “You are Holy”. It’s repeated over and over and over again. Meditate and pray on what that means. What does it mean that God is Holy? How do you feel knowing that God is Holy? Etc.”

That little bit of education on how to sing those songs helped me a lot! I still like the hymns though too!

I’m guessing that the old-style hymns are sort of a way of telling the Bible story (scripture), and the praise songs are a form of prayer.

Well it’s definitely not Eastwood. Not a fan of music in church other than Gregorian chants. I turned it off quickly.

There are not many indeed.

But there are tons of old hymns that are never sung for the same reason.

My mother-in-law calls it 7-11 music.
Seven words repeated eleven times.

I don’t like church services that doesn't feature praise music.

Listen to Tasha Cobb sing "Break Every Chain" to see if it flat.
Listen to Steffany Gretzinger sing "Reckless Love" to see if it is repetitive.

What an amazing and wonderful country we have, something for everyone.

And that is why we have two different services in our church. For those who prefer praise music and those who prefer hymns.

I used to listen to CCM decades ago (outside of formal worship). Some of it was not only musically creative, but philosophically challenging.

So-called Praise Music that plays on KLOVE nowadays is just carefully innocuous, generic kumbaya with drums, designed not to challenge anyone or anything.

That is why KLOVE refused to advertise Unplanned, the movie that actually takes a stand for something Christian, challenging the culture and government on preborn murder.

Hymns were intended to educate and enlighten one, not put one into a trance.

What’s the old saying?

Two chords

Three verses

Repeat indefinitely
