For the first time in history, Spain is no longer a majority Catholic country

For the first time in history, Spain is no longer a majority Catholic country

For the first time in its history, Spain now has more atheists, agnostics, and non-believers than it does practicing Catholics, according to a new report by the Research Center of Spanish Sociology (CIS).

While a third of Spaniards reported being Catholic, only 22.7 percent of them said that they attend mass and go to confession regularly. In Catalonia, just 10.9 percent of believers reported regularly attending mass and going to confession, while in Rojia, south of Basque country, about 40 percent of people are still practicing Catholics, FranceInfo reports.

The secularization of Spanish society has been substantially more pronounced in industrialized areas where cultures mix more often like Madrid, Catalonia, and the Basque Country.

In response to these figures, the Spanish newspaper El Diario wrote: “These figures, 80 years later, finally give reason to Manuel Azana: Spain has ceased to be Catholic.”

The statement refers to a sentence pronounced by the president of the Spanish Provisional Government in October 1931.

Up until now, Spain has lagged far behind other Western European countries where the majority of Catholics are non-practicing.

While Western European is becoming increasingly secularized, Central and Eastern Europe remain Christian strongholds. Croatia, Poland, and Hungary are all examples of this.

Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary has repeatedly defended the the idea of holding onto to a Christian Europe.

In a speech given earlier this year to the Hungarian people he said, “If we lose our Christian culture, we are going to lose our freedom.”

“Without the protection of our Christian culture we will lose Europe, and Europe will no longer belong to the Europeans,”  he declared.

Luke 18:8 8I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

“Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary has repeatedly defended the the idea of holding onto to a Christian Europe.”

This is critical.

Don’t let the Muslims take over, they will destroy everything and everyone.

I’m surprised you said that. I didn’t expect the Inquisition!

I wouldn't necessarily blame the Catholic Church alone. Protestant Europe has deviated even further and sooner than the Western European Catholic countries. For those who believe authoritarianism is a solution, they should remember that the falling away is occurring despite 35 years of the Franco regime. Nor is democracy a solution. Belgium and Ireland are democratic nations, but Christianity is in steep decline there.

With all of the allegations of wrongdoing concerning the leaders of the Catholic Church, I can understand that there may be those in Spain who chose to stay away. Looking back at history, it was the Moslems who taught the Spanish Catholics how to do the Inquisition. Maybe this time around it will be the Spanish agnostics who will teach the Moslems how to walk away from the government religion.

“The Muslims will take care of the atheist problem.”

My first thought too. I have no clue regarding their distant past, but I suspect the first place people ran to the last time the Muslims were on the move in Europe was to to the churches.

It will happen again, provided the Catholics have enough time before being conquered.
