Texas Legislature Strikes Blow for Religious Freedoms

Passes bill to protect religious business owners from secular LGBTQ zealots

AUSTIN, Texas (ChurchMilitant.com) - In a move that traditional U.S. Christians are celebrating as a triumph for American pluralism, legislators in the Lone Star State passed the controversial Senate Bill 1978 on Monday.

More commonly known as the "Save Chick-fil-A bill," SB 1978 ensures private business owners cannot be discriminated against for holding unpopular views.

The bill was drafted by Sen. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) after the San Antonio City Council denied a contract that would have permitted the opening of a Chick-fil-A franchise in the city's airport. As passed, however, the bill stops short of empowering the state's attorney general to prosecute violations of the statute.

At issue was the religious values of the chain's deceased founder, S. Truett Cathy, and his son and current Chick-fil-A CEO, Dan Cathy.

Progressives perceived Cathy's business enterprise as emblematic of a discriminatory agenda against the LGBTQ community because their Southern Baptist faith defines marriage as solely between a woman and a man.

A similar bill was blocked earlier this month on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives not on its merits but on a procedural point that the text of the bill was misleading.

SB 1978 was reconciled with the House bill and passed the Senate on May 16 and the House on May 21. Republican Governor Greg Abbott has humorously signaled he'll sign the bill into law.

Tell the San Antonio Rats to bake the cake and don’t discriminate. their “job” is to solicit food vendor contracts for the airport. They didn’t tolerate all owners.

But muzzies can continue to discriminate against seeing eye dogs in the cabs they drive and also disallow those people carrying unopened alcohol in grocery bags.

Means very little: there is no enforcement provision.

Gov Abbott... "So. What are the odds I’ll sign the Chick-fil-A bill?

I’ll let you know after dinner. "
