"Bill, Im gay. The word vomited out of my mouth. I had never actually said it before. Not out loud, at least. We were in a mostly empty chapel on the grounds of the University of Virginia, and a dozen or more Campus Crusaders were gathering up on the stage to pray. Bill looked up at the stage, then back down at me.
He nodded toward the door. His tone was hushed. How about we step outside and talk, he said. Someplace more private.
I imagined that everyone had heard me say what Id said. I glanced up as others quickly averted their gaze. I dont care, Bill, I told him. I have to get this out. Ive never told anyone.
This was the early 1990s, and I was a newly minted follower of Jesus.
I wasnt raised Christian. My dad was a senior executive in the federal government, and I was raised in a good secular family in suburban Washington, DC.
I had never gone to church or synagogue. I had never read the Bible. I definitely did not believe some ancient Near Eastern sky god was secretly pulling the ropes somewhere. A friend named Spencer once told me I was an atheist. I didnt argue.

he needs to pray more and keep his pants zipped
He’s HOMOSEXUAL, because there’s nothing GAY about it. May God through Jesus remove the illness from his life.
gosh.
incredible article.
thanks for posting.
the author seems to come closer to the truth than the religious left (who embrace gayness) and those of us who believe unapologetically in Biblical morality (as does the author).
an excellent article; a very hard journey for the author. God be praised.
And thank you for a new tagline:
Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit. 1 Thess 4:1-8
This person seems to accept that homosexuality is sin but he has yet to discover God’s power to transform those with recurrent sin problems. He’s decided to “come out” as a gay Christian while also claiming being gay doesn’t define him. Well, if it doesn’t, why are you bringing it up?
My younger brother is homosexual and I am certain he wasn’t “born that way” but grew tired of rejection from women and found homosexuals to be welcoming. Slowly, they convinced him being gay was his normal self when I know it isn’t.
I fall back on the Baptist bromide “Hate the sin but love the sinner”. I know homosexuals I accept as friends but I also am clear in what Scripture says and how easily today’s culture wants to misapply it. Confessing sin and repenting is the way to Christ, not accepting the sin and trying to make it normal.
I think I see the problem........................
You didn’t catch that he’s a virgin?
Dude’s a 46 year old virgin, sounds like he is keeping them zipped successfully so far.
Everyone has their stuff.
Everyone.
I can concede that there may actually be some people with same sex attraction but contend that homosexuality has more to do with sex then sexuality.
Multiple partners, irregardless of sex or sexuality is the issue.
With this quote, if true “ Decades have passed, and at age 46 Im still a virgin fighting a constant battle for sexual holiness.” deep in the article, identifies the author as righteous irregardless of orientation.
Let me guess, you didn't read the article?
You didn't catch that he was "begging God to forgive my sin?" ("God," I prayed, "I dont know who or what you are, but will you please forgive me for masturbating?")
You didn't catch that although he never had sexual contact with anybody (he's a virgin) he knows that lust in the heart is a sin itself, and he diligently rejects porn?
He's writing in a Christian publication for a Christian audience. It's probable that most of them would understand --- as I understand -- that when he says he "accepts the entire Christian sexual ethic," he has a good idea of what that entails.
What, exactly,do you want from him?
the article says he is a virgin
and i think the article also notes that he’s praying a lot, and reading the Bible, and genuinely striving to live a Godly, Christ-centered life
Right.
And that's just what this author didn't do: accept the sin and make it normal.
Thanks be to God.
The failure of the article is the failure to state the command against sexual immorality.”
No. You are quite wrong.
The article affirms that, and the article moreover affirms that the author is being more or less successful in living morally (he’s a virgin).
The only thing “liberal” about the article is that the author is admitting that it’s a struggle, but it’s a struggle he’s enduring with the help of Jesus.
Either the level of reading comprehension around here is really low, or... I don't know.
Sounds like he is giving his personal testimony.
