Ohio church apologizes for video of kids spitting on, hitting pastor as part of Easter lesson

A Pataskala, Ohio, church has posted an apology video after students attending a youth gathering there put up videos of children slapping, spitting and cutting a pastor.

The incident took place Monday night at an “after school hangout” at Impact City Church, where high and middle school students spend time doing such things as listening to a short gospel message, lead pastor Justin Ross said.

Ross said in the video on the church’s Facebook page that it was meant to help students learn about Easter and the crucifixion. While at the gathering, Ross said he did not lead it. Associate pastor Jaddeus Dempsey, 37, did, he said. Dempsey sat next to Ross in the apology video.

″(Jaddeus) chose to use an illustration to explain a very important topic about the crucifixion but the illustration went too far and it was inappropriate,” Ross said.

Dempsey told students that anyone who wanted to spit in his face, slap him or cut him with a steak knife that he had provided could do so without repercussions, Ross said. Several students took him up on the offer, with many of the youths recording their actions on their cellphones. Ross said many of the students were “excited” to spit on Dempsey and one cut him on the neck.

Dempsey apologized and said the idea was his and that he “crossed the line.”

Not sure that this is a megachurch, but even if they don't have a megachurch sized membership their website has a megachurch attitude.

People can learn about the crucifixion from the Bible, they don’t need ridiculous theatrics.

Geez, "The Cross and the Switchblade" isn't a how-to manual.

Or maybe he had the wrong class and he forgot to give them "the sign."

Or they might have had other motives altogether. Could have been his "katra."

Where is your sense of commitment, Jaddeus? Why didn't you let the kids nail your hands and feet to a cross, or stab you in the side with a spear?

Several students took him up on the offer

That should have been a wake up call on the complaining parents. Spare the rod and your kid will cut the pastor's neck. Just wait until these sicko kids "excitedly" start roaming the streets looking for more victims. The high school across the street from the church has very good testing scores, 91% white, and only 27% low income.

“Impact City Church”

Some of these unaffiliated, non-denominational churches are money making scams with a veneer of Christian jargon.

The latest thing is for them to franchise their business model, kind of a Tony Robbins seminar crossed with a tent revival.

They could at least go the extra mile and throw in some snake-handling, you know, for the kids.

They would if they thought that would get them a bigger congregation customer base.

I suspect that snake handlers are actually motivated by belief, unlike the slick shysters with their pop concert, entertainment franchise churches.
