Question: I had reason to hope my niece was going to convert to the Catholic faith. But there were so many obstacles the Church set up that discouraged her. She was asked to go to classes, and they told her that her marriage was not valid and she would need an annulment. Further, it was necessary to wait until Easter, etc. The nearby evangelical church set up no such obstacles, and she was able to join at once and be considered a member. I hear so much talk of evangelization today, but I share my niece’s frustration. Can we not streamline this process?

Answer: There is a kind of appealing simplicity that you describe in many Protestant denominations. But there are problems with the approach that should give us pause. Ultimately evangelization is more about conversion than mere membership. We are summoned to embrace the saving teaching of the Lord and to walk according to it.

Because adults make informed decisions, the Church considers it important to teach them the fundamentals of the Faith so that they can know what it is they are agreeing to when they enter the Church. Although some of the Scriptures portray an almost instant, on-the-spot baptism, the consensus in the early Church shifted to a lengthy, three-year period of instruction (called the catechumenate) prior to baptism. This likely was because of the insight that quick conversions often led to quick departures or a falling away when the true demands of discipleship became known.

Instructions are most insisted upon for those who are unbaptized. In the case of those who are baptized and come from different Protestant denominations, the length and content of instructions will depend on their background. It is up to the discretion of the pastor who discerns with each individual what is needed. It is certainly not required for those already baptized to “wait until next Easter.”

The concerns about a person’s marital status are rooted in the very words and teachings of Jesus himself. He teaches without ambiguity that for a person to marry, then divorce and enter another marriage, puts them in an ongoing state of adultery in the “new” marriage (cf. Mt 5:32; Mt 19:1-9; Mk 10:11-12; Lk 16:18, etc). He adds rather firmly, “What God has joined together, let no one divide” (Mt 19:9).

It will be further noted that when the Lord was evangelizing the woman at the well, he brought her to a moment of conversion, and she asked for the gift of faith. But the Lord Jesus saw fit to first raise with her the fact that she had been married five times and was now living with a man outside of marriage. Her conversion would not be complete or adequate until she was willing to live chastely. Then the graces could flow.

For reasons of their own, many Protestant denominations have decided to practically overlook such passages. But the Catholic Church takes the Lord’s teaching on these matters rather seriously, as he clearly intended that we should. In some cases, after an investigation based on evidence, the Church may use its power to bind and loose, to indicate that the previous marriage was not “what God has joined,” and it recognizes the first marriage as null. A person’s current marriage then can be blessed and recognized. But we simply cannot set the Lord’s words aside as if they were of little importance.

Thus some conversions to the Catholic faith will take some time to be faithful to the teachings of the Lord and the nature of true conversion. It is worth the diligence required.

As Catholics, we are obligated to accept all the Church teaches (what Jesus Christ taught).

It is an act of faith as Catholics to accept the Catholic Church as the one true Church established by Jesus Christ, specifically protected by the Holy Spirit to pass down the Apostolic deposit.

We accept this in faith through the supernatural grace from God.

Given that 30-45% of Catholic priests are gay, and that Catholicism has become the most homosexual religion in history, and the coverup of sexual crimes against children is the largest in history, you shouldn’t minimize this fatal flaw.

So you wouldn’t be willing to spend three years to learn what Jesus taught His Apostles so that you could accept those beliefs and to be Baptized and forgiven your sins?

Jesus didn’t need to be baptized, as He already had the knowledge and was free from sin, but in His humility he showed us that we needed to be baptized for our salvation.

Even the Apostles spent three years with Christ. I w3ould have been honored to be there, even though Christ told them they would suffer.

It is not my teachings, but those of Jesus Christ. I have asked you to provide examples of Catholic Church’s teachings that differ from those of Christ and I got silence.

I can show you a specific teaching of the Catholic Church and Jesus that is not accepted by the protestant churches - the Sacrament of the Eucharist - The Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ consecrated at Mass.

So your false superiority is based on following heretical men that abandoned the Catholic Church and established their own beliefs without the authority given to the Catholic Church by Jesus?

Do your realize that in 1968 there were only 338 annulments in the US? Now there are 50,000 plus annually???

Nitice the priest offers up again the same sacrifice. Christ was sacrificed once for all and is now seated at the right hand of God in glory. There is no ongoing sacrifice. Everything about their doctrine whether the ongoing sacrifice of the mass or works righteousness diminishes the one great act of salvation that is sufficient for all for all time.

However, technically "crucified anew" does not mean again "in the historical sense:" "Christ was offered once, and is offered daily, but in one manner then, in another now." (Peter Lombard, Sentences, Lib. IV, Dist. 12)

4. Origen (185-254): “For God is just, and therefore he could not justify the unjust. Therefore he required the intervention of a propitiator, so that by having faith in Him those who could not be justified by their own works might be justified.” Source: Origen, Commentary on Romans, 2.112.

5. Origen (again): “A man is justified by faith. The works of the law can make no contribution to this. Where there is no faith which might justify the believer, even if there are works of the law these are not based on the foundation of faith. 8. Didymus the Blind (c. 313-398) “A person is saved by grace, not by works but by faith. 9. Basil of Caesarea (329-379): “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord, that Christ has been made by God for us righteousness, wisdom, justification, redemption. This is perfect and pure boasting in God, when one is not proud on account of his own righteousness but knows that he is indeed unworthy of the true righteousness and is justified solely by faith in Christ.” Source: Basil, Homily on Humility, 20.3.

10. Jerome (347–420): “We are saved by grace rather than works, for we can give God nothing in return for what he has bestowed on us.” Source: Jerome, Epistle to the Ephesians, 1.2.1.

11. John Chrysostom (349-407): “For Scripture says that faith has saved us. Put better: Since God willed it, faith has saved us. Now in what case, tell me, does faith save without itself doing anything at all? Faith’s workings themselves are a gift of God, lest anyone should boast. What then is Paul saying? Not that God has forbidden works but that he has forbidden us to be justified by works. No one, Paul says, is justified by works, precisely in order that the grace and benevolence of God may become apparent.” Source: John Chrysostom, Homilies on Ephesians, 4.2.9.

12. John Chrysostom (again): “But what is the ‘law of faith?’ It is, being saved by grace. 28. Cyril of Alexandria (412-444): “For we are justified by faith, not by works of the law, as Scripture says. By faith in whom, then, are we justified? Is it not in Him who suffered death according to the flesh for our sake? Is it not in one Lord Jesus Christ?” Source: Cyril of Alexandria, Against Nestorius, 3.62

29. Fulgentius (462–533): “The blessed Paul argues that we are saved by faith, which he declares to be not from us but a gift from God. Thus there cannot possibly be true salvation where there is no true faith, and, since this faith is divinely enabled, it is without doubt bestowed by his free generosity. Where there is true belief through true faith, true salvation certainly accompanies it. Anyone who departs from true faith will not possess the grace of true salvation.” Source: Fulgentius, On the Incarnation, 1; CCL 91:313.

30. Bede (673-735): “Although the apostle Paul preached that we are justified by faith without works, those who understand by this that it does not matter whether they live evil lives or do wicked and terrible things, as long as they believe in Christ, because salvation is through faith, have made a great mistake. James here expounds how Paul’s words ought to be understood. This is why he uses the example of Abraham, whom Paul also used as an example of faith, to show that the patriarch also performed good works in the light of his faith. It is therefore wrong to interpret Paul in such a way as to suggest that it did not matter whether Abraham put his faith into practice or not. What Paul meant was that no one obtains the gift of justification on the basis of merits derived from works performed beforehand, because the gift of justification comes only from faith.”

In other words, your claim is absolutely false and easily proven to be false; the early church fathers cited here had more in common with Luther’s teachings than modern-day Roman Catholic garbage.

For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

The resurrection is critical to the saving work of Christ.

By having Him on the cross continually, He was not raised, so their faith is futile and they are still in their sins.

At least you are engaging a less degree of fabrication, now you just need to show where I said I was esteemed amongst his generation, or that to some degree am not, any different than you could be.

Yes. You are right about the serious consequence of sin, especially by a priest or Bishop. The Catholic Church will solve this, endure it and conquer this with the grace of God. You may be wrong on the percentage. How does it benefit to spread false witness or facts if you do not have knowledge? It is a sin to spread rumor and gossip. It is not a homosexual religion. What are you doing to solve the problem? Catholics want the Truth to be known and solve the problem. Sometimes it is difficult to get others to do the right thing.

There many holy and wonderful priests that are servants of Christ to spread His gospel and to help us reach eternal life with God.

Priests (presbuteroi) are also known as “presbyters” or “elders.” In fact, the English term “priest” is simply a contraction of the Greek word presbuteros. They have the responsibility of teaching, governing, and providing the sacraments in a given congregation (1 Tim. 5:17; Jas. 5:14–15).
