Two of my favorites are “The Strife Is Over, the Battle Won,” translated from a medieval Latin text and set to a tune written by Giovanni da Palestrina in 1591, and “Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain,” written by John of Damascus, c. AD 750 and set to a tune by Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert & Sullivan fame.

When one ponders the text “Savior of the Nations”, how deep the irony that the Feast of St. Ambrose has been better known in the US as “Pearl Harbor Day.”
