This is one of the many consequences of the evil Synod of Mainz, A.D. 1049, which forcibly ended Priestly Marriages (wives sent to convents) and which was one of causes of the Great Schism of 1054—after which the Church ceased to breathe with both her lungs.
The Orthodox have not departed from Apostolic practice of allowing Priests to marry, provided that they enter into Marriage before Ordination.
This was the universal, catholic practice for the first millenium.
