Celibacy is not the problem.

Don’t you see that homosexuality is the problem?

I see that homosexuality (and pedophilia) are the problems brought on because the Roman church, in departing from the apostolic practice that served her well for over 10 centuries has deprived men of the God-ordained means (Marriage) of channeling their God-given urges.

In my Protestant days, a Monsignor once told me and my brothers on a retreat “the problem with your church is that you refuse to embrace the charism of celibacy and the problem with my church is that we refuse to embrace the gift of a married Priesthood”.

It is an x/y matrix or grid involving Marriage and Ordination. Some are called to one or the other—those who are married laity and those who are celibate Priests. Some are called to neither: What our grandparents called spinsters and confirmed bachelors, and unordained monastics. And some are called to both.

In the Orthodox Church we have mostly married Priests but there are some who know that they are also called to the chaste life of celibacy. They are a minority, but they are the only Priests who can be elevated to the office of Bishop.

There have been scandals, but the few have mostly been Priests engaging in extra-marital affairs with adult women. And they have been dealt with severely as the Canons require.
