FULL TITLE: One thousand current and former Mormons march on church HQ in Salt Lake City demanding an end to one-on-one 'worthiness' interviews between youths and lay leaders that include sexual questions
About 1,000 current and former Mormons marched to the church's headquarters in Salt Lake City Friday to deliver petitions demanding an end to closed door, one-on-one interviews between youth and lay leaders where sexual questions sometimes arise.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints changed its policy this week to now allow children to bring a parent or adult with them to the interviews, but protesters said that doesn't go far enough to keep children safe.
The policy change followed recent revelations that a former prominent missionary leader was accused of sexually assaulting two women in the 1980s.
The ex-leader denies the allegations.

Say, Johnny, do you like gladiator movies?
Ever see a grown man naked?
If your bishop is asking your kid stuff like that you need a new bishop. I mean really.
As I understand, and believe me there are a LOT of Mormons around here, that there is a split starting in the Mormon church.
AND a lot of it is from the likes of the Jeff Flakes, et al.
I ran home and told my stepfather and he took me back over there and threatened to beat the crap out of that old man. The old man claimed they were church questions that he asked children all the time. My stepfather said he better never hear of such a thing ever again. I remember it so vividly. I was really relieved when I saw that old man scared.
exactly how best to handle such discussions with kids or with anyone including adults. I really honestly am unsure...
the subject matter asks for confidentiality but holding such discussions one-on-one without anyone else present may possibly be asking for “abuse” type difficulties? so the situation involves conflicting demands, for which an easy solution escapes me
but I am very very glad to hear that the at least one church still is trying to teach and preach some moral standards!!!!
(all jokes about the early LDS plural marriage history...aside! i like humor too but its really unfair to throw that into this discussion today, especially when they’re trying to teach their youth some basic moral standards and so many churches seem to be abandoning the effort)
If by that you mean that the left-wing of the church seems to be leaving, I think that is at least possible.
If a bishop can’t ask that question, you are showing that you don’t care about the answer, and thus that your moral position isn’t that important.
There are good arguments to be made both for and against how these interviews are currently handled, but I never felt awkward in these interviews. And the questions aren’t obscene either - more like “Are you following the law of chastity?”
This...group sure devised some weird rules in its short history.
I went to catholic schools for 12 years and never got touched or approached. I was as ugly then as I am now.
There’s nothing in the Bible giving any religious authority in any such matters........ except among pagans.
It’s one thing to ask them if they’ve sinned it’s another to kick them from the church forever if they have! What is up with that? No forgiveness? That will just teach them to not tell. Besides the bishops they are confessing to? Wanna bet they did the same sins they kicked these people from the church for?
Mine was a Catholic private academy from grade school on. We had a fag PE teacher but he knew we will kick his ass if he ever did stuff..
Or a completely new church!
You need to read the article again. One man was banned from the church for something he did as a teen. what there is no forgiveness here? Tell me others did not do the same thing or worse? Some on tell me. I’m not buying it.
A new bishop in a new church :)
I think I can top that. We had a lay teacher that was light and we were merciless and rude. he quit at the end of one year. punchline, was fighting with Che Guevara in Bolivia IIRC.
We had nuns on grammar school. They liked to spank but they would not spank 7-8 grade boys who were bigger than they were I wasn’t the type that needed to be spanked, not by polish nuns away.
Our priest were irish street thugs from Dublin and futbol players. one used to go to C rated movies (condemned by the church) and report back to us. Had a teacher that looked like a vampire. We called him Drac. French teacher. Thought he was asexual or too scary to engage.
Kids/teenagers don’t get kicked out for whatever they confess, and nobody is kicked out forever. For example, if an adult were to commit adultery, there is a strong chance that they would be kicked out of the church. However, people in their ward would work to have them rejoin the church in full fellowship.
Your last questions seem to imply that anybody receiving confession must be perfect to receive that confession. It also seems to imply a belief that the bishops asking these questions are judging the people confessing the sins. My experience has been the exact opposite of that implication in that bishops I have dealt with have been loving, supportive and understanding.
