A 129-year-old, strikingly beautiful West Pasadena church suffered major damage and the loss of at least one significant historical statue after a vandal or vandals broke in early Saturday morning, spray painted graffiti, destroyed property and set fire to the structure.
Although the fire was quickly extinguished by the Los Angeles City Fire Department, the Church of the Angels, at 1100 Avenue 64, suffered major damage from the assault, Pasadena Fire Dept. spokesperson Lisa Derderian said.
The fire was reported by a 911 caller in the neighborhood who saw smoke at about 2:20 a.m. A Los Angeles Fire Dept. spokesperson said 41 firefighters knocked down the blaze in 14 minutes.
The reporting party lives in the Los Angeles city jurisdiction because this church is right on the border, so L.A. City Fire responded notified our battalion chief because it was determined later that the church is situated in the city of Pasadena, Derderian said.
Very sad as far as the historical significance, Derderian said, noting in particular the damage to a statue thats solid oak that was built with the original church in 1889.
Derderian said a joint arson task force comprised of investigators from the Pasadena Fire Department and neighboring jurisdictions will be handling the investigation.
Notifications will be made to other agencies depending if the need exists to escalate to a state or federal level because it is a church, she said.
Investigators will be on scene with police most of Saturday, Derderian said.
Once day breaks we hope to get more information, to see if there were security cameras in that location because there are homes right across the street, she said.
Derderian said the beautiful church is frequently used as a filming location and had in fact been scheduled for a shoot today, which has......

I’m not saying it was Obama but:
‘The Future Must Not Belong To Those Who Slander The Prophet Of Islam’
Hate crime?
Political leaders in Baltimore are now expressing concern about the vandalism on statues. Baltimore, whose nickname is The Monumental City started the attacks on statues when they removed some civil war statues. IIRC the taliban was big on destroying statues.
Just a guess, but I’m thinking there was a bit more to this than simple vandalism.
Of course, the MSM will not want to talk about that, and believes that if they don’t talk about it, it will not have happened.
Funny how all the ‘news’ mentions the spray painting, yet no one shows it. Gee, I wonder what the message was?
Yes, very sad the historical significance, but of course nothing is said about the spiritual or social significance of this attack against Christianity.
Things are moving along quite fast now.

From report: “Investigators are checking some objects for DNA.”
My guess is that this won’t be classified as a hate crime. Only about one in thirty such attacks are so classified.
It is interesting that the specific content of the graffiti is not mentioned. If the graffiti had been anti-gay or anti-Islamic, the graffiti would have been quoted verbatim.
A beautiful church.
No alarm system for break in and fire risk?? No interior/exterior cameras? No armed guard or security motion monitoring of any kind?
Did anyone actually care about this church?
Probably someone might be offended, what with security protections in place.
I’m guessing either hard-left nihilist Antifa types, or Muslims. Or just dirtbag druggies who like breaking stuff.
But you’re right, the content of the graffiti likely has the answer.
California has been experiencing a series of attacks on its Catholic churches and sites. Anybody keeping track of these attacks ? Looks like the media as well as the hierarchy are keeping mum because of a probable moslem connection .
Now imagine if this was a mosque. The leftists are concerned about attacks on Islam, encourage them against Christianity.
