Everyone has almost certainly heard of Oscar Wilde, the witty Victorian-era Irish playwright whose many affairs with other men landed him in a British jail and eventual self-exile in France, where he died in 1900 at the age of 46.
Hes been a hero to some to the point where theres actually a United Methodist worship space dedicated to him in the symbolic heart of New York City gay culture. Tara Burton, Vox.coms new religion writer describes it for us.
The key, as you read this feature, is to look for any sign of dissenting voices questioning its big themes. Look for conservative Methodists defending their church's teachings on sexuality, experts on Wilde's final repentance and conversion to Catholicism. That kind of thing.
Hidden in the basement of New Yorks Church of the Village, a Methodist church in Greenwich Village, is an entirely unconventional worship space.
The aesthetic a neo-Gothic stained glass window, a devotional statue, a series of paintings depicting the life and suffering of a martyr is perfectly familiar. The chapels advertised uses -- weddings, memorial services, contemplation -- are likewise commonplace. The subject, however, is not.
At the Oscar Wilde Temple, a religiously themed installation project by McDermott & McGough, the art-world tag of artists David McDermott and Peter McGough, the central statue and the figure of worship is of Wilde himself: the 19th-century Anglo-Irish novelist and playwright whose name has become synonymous with LGBTQ liberation.

That sounds like something I’d like to tear down.
Holy crap. Well, maybe I shouldn’t say that or next thing you know there will be a turd temple popping up in Seattle. It’s like churches are actively trying to turn away anyone with actual morality.
If Wilde were around today, he would eviscerate them with a one-liner.
Oscar Wilde never met a boy he didn’t like. He was scum.

Any taxpayer/NEA funds behind this art installation project?
They could do worse, and will.

So the ACLU is okay with government funds for religious works as long as they are homofascist in nature.
“On your knees...”
He'd probably be the equivalent of Milo.
So a Mathodist group is claiming a Catholic (Wilde converted on his death bed) as a saint?
Really no shocker, even if Methodists historically have not gone in for saint veneration.
As with any liberal religious outfit, they make it up as they go along.
Sorry, but Oscar Wilde died a Catholic, repentant of his sins and in the bosom of Holy Mother Church. As such he may be in Heaven, but is not a Methodist or “gay” ideology “saint”.
Wilde had a deathbed conversion. He may very well be a saint, but not as the hedonists would have him be.
Methodists don’t recognize saints and I have never before heard of a Methodist house of worship calling itself a temple.
Powerful elements in the United Methodist church have been actively nurturing and supporting homosexual lifestyles and politics for at least 4 decades. Whenever possible they have destroyed ministers and many powerful Christian ministries by deceit and slander. Satan is thriving in this once devout church.

I guess the lgbtq folks want to gloss over that part of his life.
A great wit/ writer yes. But a life unbefitting sainthood or Veneration. These homosexuals are making themselves look very foolish indeed. And if their “church” allows this, they’d be well advised to find another church
Nietzsche wrote (I’m paraphrasing) that Shakespeare was a sentimental buffoon, but that he himself would rather be a buffoon than a saint. Wilde would probably have agreed.
The United Church of Christ also used a quotation from the great comedienne Gracie Allen as their official slogan, “Never place a period where God has placed a comma.”
She was Catholic (her husband was famously Jewish), not a Congregationalist/UCCer.
