Alvernia University has dropped its Crusaders mascot, saying many have found it troublesome, even offensive.
Even more important, they view the image as opposed to the peace and harmony of right relationships modeled by St. Francis and the spirit of inclusiveness for which Franciscans strive, officials with the Franciscan-Catholic university in Pennsylvania state on their website.
In a Frequently Asked Questions page, officials reject the notion that the decision is steeped in political correctness.
Its a matter of being true to our Franciscan mission and our core values of service, humility, peacemaking, contemplation, and collegiality, they state. This change is also a response to the spirit of peace, harmony, and inclusiveness that Franciscans aspire to and that Pope Francis upholds.
They add the decision was unanimous among student government leaders, the faculty and alumni councils, the Board of Trustees and President Thomas Flynn. The Crusaders will remain through the end of the semester and a new mascot is expected to be announced in June.
Most comments on the universitys Facebook page suggest people are disappointed with the change. Some suggested new nicknames such as bellyachers or Snowflakes.

The correct response to anyone finding it troublesome or offensive is to educate them on the truth of the Crusades, not to bow down to popular (although incorrect) belief.
The new mascot should be a wolf, in honor of the wolf of Gubbio.
People have altered history. The Crusades saved the world from Islam which sought to subjecate people through slaughter.
Apology for the Crusades coming? How bout one for Evangelizing Africa and Asia and maybe even the new world. So sorry, Jesus made us do it...
LIB idiots. If it weren’t for the Crusaders responding to the murderous anti-civilization moozlum invasions, there morons wouldn’t have a catholic university. What mental defectives. They should be beaten with their bibles.
My alma mater went politically correct years ago. I loved the Crusader mascot, proud warrior. Now we’re the Sea Lions. No one is afraid of a Sea Lion.
By golly, I am.
They don’t call them Sea Hamsters.
There’s a reason they call them Sea Lions.
Sea LIONS.....KILLER Whales.....I stay out of the ocean.
The Campus Crusade for Christ changed their name to just “Cru”. Why did that venerable organization do that? They apparently wanted to deemphasize the word “crusade”.
And remember how “W” said that we would be on a crusade against terror, soon after 9/11? He used that word exactly one time, then afterward that word was deleted from his vocabulary.
Off topic but people today don’t really know the history of the Crusades. They tend to think that the European Christians were the “bad guys”, and accept Obamas half assed wisdom that we have to get off our high horse because of what was done in the name of Christ in medieval Europe.
The alumni of Alvernia who disagree with this change should withhold all contributions.
The “wussy pussys”?
We need more christian universities who aren’t ashamed of being “Crusaders”.
Because sometimes that is what we are called to be.
To their everlasting shame - intentional self inflicted ignorance of history. Those involved should be forced to rediscover their faith’s history or fired.
Many people find the crucifix offensive. How about removing the crucifix from Catholic schools?
The new mascot is a yellow belly chicken.
Is this the one that sucks up to muslims?
Why, yes, yes indeed it is:

Yes, most “catholic” colleges these days are troublesome and offensive. Crusaders, on the other hand, are not. But anything that has the whiff of a “Y” chromosome drives these people batty.
