You are still a Catholic. The mark of your Baptism on your soul is still there. All you have to do is sit down with a priest and get your questions answered.

Then you would no longer be an inactive Catholic.

It’s money to be given to God. This can happen in a variety of ways.

If one digs through the Pentateuch, the tithes in two years of the 7 year cycle were to go to what we would think of as charitable sorts of things, and the tithes in four of the years were to be used during the pilgrimage feasts—1/30th for God in ways that we think of for God, 1/15th for celebrating God festally.

May I make a suggestion? Encourage your wife to write a check to one of your local Catholic grade schools.

That's actually what she did the last two years. I'm a former (conservative, duh) Episcopalian and my church left me. I think my wife feels now about the current pope like I do about my former church.

You are right, we are not flexible. I am just one of those who left the catholic church, and gives to an evangelical church.

It will read Caucus in parentheses after the title.

There are also non-Catholic caucus threads in the religion forum.

So his statements in support of Islam and against Catholic teachings are not official teachings of the Pope?

Someday I may, but certainly not while this fake Pope is in office.
It used to be you could say “Is the Pope Catholic” as a statement of certainty. I’m not even convinced he’s a Christian, much less a Catholic.
It’s a very long story about why I left the Church, but the short version is that the Church moved a priest they knew to be a pedophile into my parish, I was not a victim of molestation, but some I knew were.

Yet our Catholic friends suggest it’s Jesus plus works. And doing a whole bunch of other stuff.

I’m sorry about those circumstances in your former parish. It should have never happened that way.

There are gradations of teachings, but anything of any seriousness will be published as a document in a journal called the Acta Apostolic Sedes (abbreviated AAS), and formally addressed to those who need to actually read it.

Spouting off to the New York Times is great fun, no doubt, but it is a private hobby.

The teachings of one Pope also need to be read in light of the teachings of other Popes. With this one, unless it either appears in the AAS or pertains directly to something I am doing or teaching about, I generally simply go with what other Popes have said, in light of a principal outlined by Pius XII in an encyclical addressed to everyone and published in the AAS which runs to the effect: interpret the less clear in light of the more clear, and not the more clear in the light of the less clear, no matter which one was published first. (I believe this is fro Humani Generis, published in 1950, but it may be from Divino Afflante Spiritu, published in 1943).

Threads which are labelled “Caucus” threads in the title are only to have posters who are members of that “caucus.” Note that this is not a caucus thread.

http://www.freerepublic.com/~religionmoderator/
“Religion Forum threads labeled “Caucus”

Caucus threads are closed to any poster who is not currently and actively a member of the caucus group.

For instance, if it says “Catholic Caucus” and you are not currently, actively Catholic, then do not post to the thread.

However, if the poster of the caucus invites you, I will not boot you from the thread.

The “caucus” article and posts must not compare beliefs or speak in behalf of a belief outside the caucus.

There is little to no tolerance for non-members of a caucus coming onto the caucus thread to challenge whether or not it should be a caucus. Gross disruption usually follows.”

Spouting off to the NYT is not really private, is it?

Thank you for your kind replies

I went through catechism classes as a kid and attended Mass weekly until I was a teen when I left.
My parents remained Catholics until they passed.
I was quite happy as a Methodist for many years, but sadly they have gone leftist as well. Currently, I am unchurched.
I’m not as well versed as many here, but what this Pope is saying seems not just divergent from traditional Catholicism but completely at odds with what I was taught.
I have always respected and looked up to previous Popes, this one I find that impossible.
He seems intent on changing what had always seemed to be an unchangeable institution. The Church has always stood against homosexuality, abortion, divorce regardless of the pressures of popular culture.
I sincerely hope he does not completely ruin the Church.
That seems to be his mission.

** The Church has always stood against homosexuality, abortion, divorce regardless of the pressures of popular culture**

And it still is. The opinions of Francis do not change the truths of the Catholic Church.

It isn’t official, which makes it private.

Likewise, a priest (or a Pope) leading a 100,000 faithful in the Rosary at a stadium is still leading them in a private devotion. The same saying Mass “alone” is performing a public action, as he is exercising his priestly office.

One might question the prudence of spouting off to the Times, but better something stupid there than something stupid in an Encyclical.

If by not really private, you merely mean “potentially capable of causing grave scandal,” you may have a point, but the NYT is not where the plentitude of Papal authority is exercised.

That he will not succeed will prove one more mark of the Divine Guidance of the Church.

Scott Hahn (a fairly well known former Presbyterian Minister who is now a professor at Franciscan University) once quipped that if a Protestant Church were run the way the Catholic Church is run, it wouldn’t last five minutes.

Pius VI is alleged to have said to Napoleon: You silly little man, you think that you can destroy the Church, when we and our priests haven’t been able to do so in 18 centuries?

I believe that, by the grace of God, we will survive Francis, but I’m not sure that makes the whole thing that much less painful.

“So his statements in support of Islam and against Catholic teachings are not official teachings of the Pope?”

Right. he would cease to be Pope; Pope in name only.

Do you consider the Ten Commandments a bunch of other stuff?
