If the role of religion in America today is to teach the faithful to bend over and kiss the ring of postmodernity and beg for forgiveness for actually believing something, the Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod just failed spectacularly, flubbed its lines, and fell off the stage. I, for one, am elated.
Tuesdays St. Louis Post-Dispatch revealed the grand faux pas with this somewhat ironic lede: The Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod recently carried out what various members consider the equivalent of a modern-day heresy trial.
My enthusiasm is, of course, mixed with sadness. The Rev. Dr. Matthew Becker (the hero/victim of the breathlessly Hawthornean Post-Dispatch piece) has agitated against the churchs plainly worded doctrinal statements, to which he was bound, for many years, and should have been removed from the LCMSs clergy roster a long time ago. Though he teaches at Valparaiso University, which is not affiliated with the LCMS, he has managed to maintain his status on the clergy roster, despite several previously unsuccessful attempts to remove him. Tuesdays news is therefore a victory for orthodoxy. Nonetheless it is tragic to witness a man persisting in promoting false and harmful doctrine, and tragic to see him face the consequences. And yes, the rich etymology of tragic traces back to the Greek tragos, which means goat, and yes, the sheep needed to be separated from this one.

Be careful The LCMS and WELs hold to the Augsburg confession and sound doctrine the ELCA is apostate just like most of the main lines be sure to differentiate when looking at lutherans
***We are Lutherans, not Reformed (inside baseball).***
We love y’all anyway!
There’s a big reason that I ‘hang my hat’ at the LCMS, as several Catholic posters have said in a very disparaging manner.
This is the big reason.
As opposed to certain people I will not speak of who are perfectly gleeful to remain part of a church where their leaders are selling out the faith.
God bless you and your stance
Be rooted in Christ!
They do exist...rising ELCA starlet Nadia Bolz Weber, frequently sought as a hip presenter at youth gatherings:
I wonder if everyone in church freaks out when Pastor Weber presides over weddings.
LOL!

Amen!
Punctuation can be your friend, too.
I understand and thanks for pointing that out I am currently using my iPhone to post and it is not quite as easy as on a real keyboard
Millions, over the past 25 years, have fled Episcopalianism, Presbyterianism, United Methodism and the ELCA over their slide into these same messes — female ordination, promotion of homosexuality, repudiation of the scriptures, marxism and leftist politics recast as sermons and policy, et cetera. So glad the LCMS is standing firm.
The biggest issue is the same in the LCMS as it is in many synods, churches, and denominations. Simply put, they are a corporation, and are thereby bound by corporate law. There was a case a decade ago where a judge ruled that the congregation was NOT part of the legal corporation of the LCMS, while the pastor MAY be.
Ah, yes, I understand now. :-)
What a ghastly apparition!
“My only regret is that Harrison is not eligible to take over the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago.”
Boy, have you got that right.
We are Catholic but our grand kids just finishing up a good week of VBS at a small Missouri Synod church two blocks away.
