SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – Students and parents from schools controlled by the Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco protested at Saint Mary’s Cathedral on Ash Wednesday, saying the church should stay out of teachers’ bedrooms and drop proposed morality clauses in teacher contracts.

On Ash Wednesday, one of the holiest days on the Catholic calendar, the students and parents are hoping Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone will change his mind on the clauses, as the church heads into 40 days of Lenten reflection.

"We’re here because if Jesus were alive today, he’d be standing right next to us,” Mairead Ahlbach, a student at Sacred Heart, told the crowd.

At issue, the archbishop’s proposed morality contracts for teachers, including opposition to homosexuality and contraceptives

A substantial number of "Catholic" schools in this country (and elsewhere) simply need to be shut down. They're serving no useful purpose in teaching and passing on the faith and in many cases are toxic and detrimental to it. The religious who originally staffed them have long gone, thanks to the implosion in vocations and the schools have become social workshops for nominal Catholics and sundry others who've embraced the zeitgeist and are looking for nothing more challenging than a private school alternative to public education.

Well OBVIOUSLY the Church should be prevented from controling operations at Church-owned schools

The wall of separation between leftists and logical thought requires it.

It will soon be a crime for Catholic schools to be... Catholic.

From Our Lady's Warriors>Dissent>Organizations:

A Call to Action

The most visible dissenting group which is a movement of laity and religious seeking to reform the "sinful structure" of the "patriarchal" Church. One could call them the "mother of all dissenting groups" - feminist pun intended. CTA is infamous since its 1994 conference coverage on the CBS news program 60 Minutes. CTA promotes dissent against Church teachings on a broad front, including women's ordination, homosexuality, creation spirituality, married priesthood, and liturgical reforms, while incorporating new age and Wiccan spirituality. Bishop Bruskewitz excommunicated those that belong to this group in his Diocese. Many members belong to local  groups called "small faith communities." Renew 2000 also promotes small faith communities. Membership draws heavily from former clergy, feminist nuns, and homosexuals. Members staff COR. CTA serves on the national task force for the We Are Church referendum. Get a more complete understanding of their position from their own information. For a list of their speakers at the 2004 conference, click here.

The Underground Call to Action

If internal heresy were likened to a disease, how might one imagine its progressive assault against the Body of Christ? The errors embed themselves within the members of diocesan staff and in parish leadership, from that point they spread through polluted catechesis, workshops, and homilies. ... The Call to Action (CTA) movement is just such a syndrome of internal heresies. (off-site)

"We’re here because if Jesus were alive today, he’d be standing right next to us,”

Only someone who has never read the Bible could make such a foolish statement.

My how things have changed, in just 20 years. It used to be, that to be “MORAL” was one of the attributes of people. The tables have been turned up side down. Now “MORALITY” means “IF IT FEELS GOOD, IT’S GOT TO BE “MORAL”. This was the same thing that happened in the 1920’s, especially, in Germany. It didn’t turn out very well for the rest of the world, did it? I fear that we are headed for some very dark times, until we get back to our senses.

We don’t want our teachers to leave and maybe even leave the faith. We just think that maybe the Catholic Church should become as progressive as the Episcopal Church,” the student said.

In other words "If only you Catholics weren't so darn Catholic we could all get along."

The Catholic schools - like agencies such as the YMCA and YWCA - have long been infiltrated by people who are not committed to the original mission of the institution. They are often even quite hostile to that mission. I agree that most Catholic schools should be shut down; they have become refuges from the worst aspects of the public schools for people with the means to pay. They are no longer transmitters of the Catholic tradition. In many Catholic schools, non-Catholics comprise 40% or more of the student body.

"It will soon be a crime for Catholic schools to be... Catholic."

Marquette University (Catholic) recently fired a long-time professor for defending Catholic teaching opposing gay marriage. On a Catholic campus, defending Catholic doctrine was labeled hate speech.

"We don’t want our teachers to leave and maybe even leave the faith."

They've already left the faith. They just want the church to also abandon its faith.

Don’t the penguins have rulers anymore?

I was grad school in the early ‘80s, nearly 40 at the time, and took several of my courses at the Catholic Barry University campus (Miami). I made the mistake of sitting on a hallway table between classes. Once.

"Don’t the penguins have rulers anymore?"

That kind is as rare nowadays as a Latin Mass. Or maybe a unicorn.

My wife was Catholic school principal who tried very hard to foster the Catholic identity of her last school. It was some of the parents of the children in the school and so called progressive parishioners that opposed her. When she left that school, Catholic was soon dropped from its name. She had restored it two years previously. It had been dropped before.

There are about five or six basic attitudes about homosexuality:

1. It is an abomination in the sight of the Lord.

2. It is a psychological disorder that should be treated and cured if possible. I would not want my child to be a homosexual.

3. It is kind of weird and goofy, but no big deal, and not particularly a moral issue unless children are involved.

4. It is a bit strange, but kind of interesting and attractive.

5. It is an inborn trait, comparable to skin color, and should be protected by law no matter what we think of it.

6. It is cutting-edge, a gift, a special way to be and to express one's sexuality. We (heterosexuals) can learn a lot from it.

The number of people in each of the first three groups has been shrinking, but I think they are still the majority, albeit by a small margin. But that group is outnumbered among the opinion-shapers, and so is demoralized.

I think most Catholic schools will eventually go the way of the Ivy League, i.e., they will abandon their Catholic/religious identity and become progressive schools for rich kids.

We’re here because if Jesus were alive today, he’d be standing right next to us,” Mairead Ahlbach, a student at Sacred Heart, told the crowd.

This vapid little imp presumes much. Furthermore, she clearly does not believe upon the living, risen, almighty Son of God.

And finally, to the poor little idiot child Mairead: In the event that the Lord Jesus Christ saw fit to physically manifest Himself in your unworthy presence, HE would be the ONLY one standing. YOU would be looking for the nearest rock beneath which to hide.

I’ve looked at dozens of websites for Catholic colleges. There is a clear dichotomy between those that are proudly Catholic and those that are embarrassed about it.

I think the ones with real Catholic identity will flourish, but only if they offer majors people really need, and if they foster relationships. People who meet their spouse at college will go on to make bigger alumni donations and send their own children there, I think.

Check out Christendom College in Front Royal, VA.

Proudly Catholic, and not worried what anyone thinks about it.

Yes, they are very clear on their website about their commitment. They are almost too militant in tone, but perhaps I take it that way because I’ve been living among the embarrassed Catholics for so long.
