Ten Things Every Catholic Should Know About Sola Scriptura

Do you know how to answer a non Catholic Christian who challenges you about the Bible?

Knowing how everybody loves lists, here are ten things every Catholic should know about Sola Scriptura:

1. Sola Scriptura means “only Scripture”. It is the Protestant belief that the Bible is the only source for teaching on doctrine and morality.

2. Sola Scriptura was one of three “solos” the other two being Sola Fide (Faith Alone) and Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)

3. Sola Scriptura which means “Scripture Alone” cannot be found in the Bible. The closest proof text is 2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God  may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” While this verse says Scripture is useful for these things it doesn’t say Scripture is the only source for “teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

4. While Protestants claim to follow Sola Scriptura, in practice they interpret the Bible according to their own denominational traditions. Presbyterians have the Bible plus Calvinism. Baptists have the Bible plus their theological opinions. Lutherans have the Bible plus the teaching of Luther etc.

5. Jesus commanded and prophesied that he would establish a church, but he nowhere commanded or prophesied that a book would be written recording his words and works. This is why Catholics say the Church came first. The Bible came second. Jesus passed his authority on through the apostles–not through a book.

6. How could sola Scriptura be the only way for people to know God when, for most of history, the majority of people could neither read nor have access to books?

7. Protestants blame Catholics for believing late, man made doctrines that the early church had never heard of, but Sola Scriptura had never been heard of before the sixteenth century. Not only can it not be proved from the Bible, but there is no trace of the doctrine of sola Scriptura anywhere in the writings of the early church. The entire edifice of Protestantism, however, is based on the foundation of sola Scriptura.

8. If the only source for teaching and moral instruction comes from the Bible how are we supposed to answer the questions that arise about things that were never heard of in Bible times? How can the Bible instruct us about important current problems like nuclear war, artificial contraception, in vitro fertilization, euthanasia, gender re-assignment or genetic modification, cloning or a whole range of other modern issues. Only a living and dynamic, Spirit filled authority can sift the facts and come up with the right teaching.

9. Sola Scriptura is linked with the idea of that the Bible is easy enough for any simple person to understand. While the basic teachings seem easy to understand it is clear that the Bible is an extremely complex document which requires the insights of theologians, Bible scholars and linguists to understand clearly. Why else would Protestant pastors be required to go to seminary before being qualified to be pastors?

10. Sola Scriptura has led to the thousands of divisions within Protestantism. Because they couldn’t agree, even from the beginning, the Protestant leaders began to split and form their own sects. How could sola Scriptura be the foundation for the church when it leads to such division? How could this division be part of Jesus command and prayer that there be “one flock and one shepherd”?

Those show that Christ authorized his Apostles to forgive sin.

Yes, as EVERY believer in and follower of only Lord Jesus Christ is urged to do, for everyone's good, as our forgiveness of others is linked to God's forgiveness of us, as we are reminded in the Lord's Prayer.

Doesn’t the Lords Prayer say we are ALL to do that? You want to pick one, I pick one. Now what do we do?

Actually that list of 21 had so many intrinsic errors one would need 21 posts to show them all.

If "all" in Scripture meant in every case "each and every one with no exception," then you would have a point as to Mary. But most often it isn't used in that absolute sense.

The catholic position on this would place Mary on the same level as Christ as we know He did not sin nor was He born into sin. There can be no other implication for the catholic. This is why, in party, the catholic appeals to mary for salvation. A lot of this mindset is behind the fifth marian dogma to proclaim mary as coredemtrix, advocate and helper.

To continue to believe in the false teaching that mary was without sin, born without sin, never sinned, etc, the catholic has to ignore these, amongst other, verses in the Bible.

1 Peter 2:22-24

For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; 23and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

Galatains 2:15-21

“We are Jews by nature and not sinners from among the Gentiles; 16nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified. 17“But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? May it never be! 18“For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19“For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live to God. 20“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. 21“I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

Are Catholics THAT desperate to denigrate and undermine the inherent authority of the very God breathed, Holy Spirit inspired Word of God that they will go to those kind of lengths to disqualify it?

In a word... YES.

It's not only a sad thing, but they are to be pitied. I pray The Lord will open their hearts to Him.

It's funny, isn't it? Catholics have to Strawman Sola Scriptura in order to attack it. As we know (and they do too), SS means that Scripture contains all we need to know to come to salvation and to live a Christian life, NOT that Scripture contains everything ever known.

But to source it to Luther's supposed emotional problems? Really?

Someone needs to get the bunny with a pancake on its head and send it to the person who posted this mess....

:D

2. The Bible Indicates that In Addition to the Written Word, we are to accept Oral Tradition

You mean like Catholics accept Jewish Oral Tradition aka the Talmud? Note that this article is found on the same apologetics website that the "21 Reasons to Reject" article is hosted on. Reads like a "hate site" to me.

...other than to change the topic to distract from your gaffe of citing to Vatican I (the most strongly pro-Papal council ever) when trying to argue against the Papacy.

Seems like your anger toward me is displaced.

Why do you, a devout Catholic, fail to go along with what Rome puts out?

Though, as is most often the case, I suspect you've just copied this entire pre-formatted post from somewhere with little clue about the overall topic.

You might be right.

Now that you've discredited the messenger; discredit the message.

He accepted the decision of the Council.

Would it not be prudent for you to do the same?

...I was keeping on the narrower topic of Matt. 16:18.

The reason I cited that was to demonstrate that the expiation of sin was a public affair.

well, that certainly does not fit with the privacy and anonymity of the confessional booth, nor with the fact that whatever is told a priest in the confessional cannot be revealed, even if a person commits murder.

**2. The Bible Indicates that In Addition to the Written Word, we are to accept Oral Tradition**

Given the low view you have of Scripture, based on your post anyway, I find it ironic that you even attempt to use Scripture to validate your flimsy point.

I keep asking this question. Never get an answer.

I do not post the following to be a smart ass, but would hope that many would truly read and reflect on them. NONE of us have the mind of God though many here think we do.

Jesus major message is REPENT. This applies to ALL of us. God destroying the old system, tore the curtain from the top. Gave us freedom to have a personal relationship with Him. The apostles passed on to us freedom and responsibility. Jesus hated the rules imposed by the religious leaders because it interfered with the personal relationship he wants with us.

Please note this emphasis in Revelation: “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit” Sola Scripture means we TEST EVERYTHING WITH THE WORD OF GOD even the Holy Spirit. The Jews had a lot of traditions like divorce, that God allowed because of the hardness of their heart, but that did not mean he approved of them.

Deu_29:4 But to this day the LORD has not given you minds that understand, nor eyes that see, nor ears that hear!

Pro_20:12 Ears to hear and eyes to see—both are gifts from the LORD.

Isa_6:10 Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to Me for healing.”

Isa_30:21 Your own ears will hear Him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.

Isa_32:3 Then everyone who has eyes will be able to see the truth, and everyone who has ears will be able to hear it.

Isa_42:20 You see and recognize what is right but refuse to act on it. You hear with your ears, but you don’t really listen.”

Jer_6:10 To whom can I give warning? Who will listen when I speak? Their ears are closed, and they cannot hear. They scorn the word of the LORD. They don’t want to listen at all.

Jer_19:3 Say to them, ‘Listen to this message from the LORD, you kings of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem! This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: I will bring a terrible disaster on this place, and the ears of those who hear about it will ring!

Eze_12:2 “Son of man, you live among rebels who have eyes but refuse to see. They have ears but refuse to hear. For they are a rebellious people.

Mat_11:15 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!

Mat_13:9 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

Mat_13:15 For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes—so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to Me and let Me heal them.’

Mat_13:43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!

Mar_4:9 Then He said, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

Mar_4:23 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

Mar_7:16 [Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.]

Luk_8:8 Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed
grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!” When He had said this, He called out, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

Luk_14:35 Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”

Act_28:27 For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes—so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to Me and let Me heal them.’

Rom_11:8 As the Scriptures say, “God has put them into a deep sleep. To this day He has shut their eyes so they do not see, and closed their ears so they do not hear.”

2Ti_4:3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.

Rev_2:7 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give fruit from the tree of life in the paradise of God.

Rev_2:11 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death.

Rev_2:17 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.

Rev_2:29 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches.

Rev_3:6 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches.

Rev_3:13 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches.

Rev_3:22 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches.”

Rev_13:9 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.

Catholics depending on Scripture to refute sola Scriptura?

Can you say *ironic*?

Sure seems that they think its authoritative enough when they want something supported.

When they don’t like it......

Scripture? What’s that?
