Pope Francis believes it is fine for parents to smack their children as punishment for bad behaviour.
He made the remarks, which were condemned by campaigners for child protection, in front of thousands of people at his weekly general audience in St Peter’s Square during a homily about the responsibilities of fatherhood.
The Pope recalled a conversation he had had with a father, who told him that on occasion he hits his children if they have been naughty.
The Pope, smiling and miming the action of slapping a child on the bottom, said: “One time, I heard a father say, 'At times I have to hit my children a bit, but never in the face so as not to humiliate them.’
“That’s great. He had a sense of dignity. He should punish, do the right thing, and then move on,” he told around 7,000 people gathered in the Pope Paul VI Hall on Wednesday....

Brings up a question though: What exactly does this Francis fellow do anyway - I mean besides tell us what the Bible has already told us?
After all, we have to check everything he says against the Scriptures. And Catholics are always defending him by pointing to the Scriptures.
Seems like a redundant position that could be eliminated - at considerable cost savings, I’d imagine.
I think that some of our problems in schools are due to school personnel not being allowed to use corporal punishment anymore.
These kids know that it’s against the law for anyone to physically touch them. Which probably leads these kids to think that they can get away with more and more, without consequences.
It’s getting to the point where we won’t be able to physically discipline our own kids.
I agree with what he said but we get a quote a day from this Pope, usually about day to day stuff that we really don’t need his opinion on. He needs to keep quite every once in a while.

He’s basically the Cardinal Archbishop of Rome, but tradition makes him superior to all other bishops.

But not everyone is impressed by outward appearances. After all, it’s the message we want to hear, right? Not the messenger.
I never smacked our children for bad behavior. But sometimes, I had to smack them to get their attention so we could discuss it.

You seem to forget that Christ Himself didn’t find the position “redundant.” You protestants DO believe in popes. as long as it is you who is the pope! God is not the author of confusion, so obviously the same message isn’t getting to everyone.
Just read that the Pope will speak to Congress in September. I hope the Dems have a conniption fit.
