Why I No Longer Support the Society of Saint Pius X
The Vatican In Exile ^ | Sep 29, 2014 | John C. Cummings

Posted on 10/13/2014 7:40:59 AM PDT by Alex Murphy

We are including this piece on the Society of Saint Pius X, because We have been able to verify the accuracy of the statements contained here in. Also it describes well the conditions at Armada, since the author received his information from a fellow seminarian, who was dismissed the same day I was. (See the Scandal of December 15, 1978.)

14th March, 1979

Some months ago I made an important decision. I discontinued all contributions to the New York office of the Society of Saint Pius X and tore up my pledge of support to the Society seminary in Michigan. For a traditionalist Catholic like myself, this was quite a decision. I was knowingly cutting off aid to the only American based Catholic order which assures me of the continuation of the priests to dispense the sacraments according to the ancient rites of the Church. . . I must show my disapproval with the official American branch of the Society, and I can best do this by a financial boycott.

This week when the collection basket came by at our local chapel I contributed nothing. I am are of my obligations as a Catholic. I did not take this action lightly. My reasons are as follows:

My contributions are being wasted by mismanagement and poor investment. I am scandalized by young priests buying costly mansions and living like playboys in palatial homes (the Woolworth estate, Oyster Bay, N.Y.) while there is no effort being made to provide a suitable place for the proper worship of God. Two priests share a princely palace with cooks, servants, secretaries, etc., while we are told there are not funds enough to buy or build a church. These priests own not one, but two such estates on Long Island alone. The expense of maintaining such a building far exceeds that which is available. This unwise purchase has resulted in costly lawsuits. The location in a plush area of New York’s elite, has resulted in turning an entire community against our movement, and made “any enemies of Catholics and non-Catholics who would have otherwise been sympathetic, if not actual, supporters.

I am appalled by Rev. Clarence Kelly’s secret plot to utilize the help of left wing Communist front organizations to file suit against the town of Oyster Bay in order to bring pressure to bear on town officials and to force them into submission. This plan, according to seminary rector, Father Donald Sanborn, is in the process of being actualized. These traditional Catholics are so loyal that they do not hesitate to join hands with Satan and cooperate with the enemy when it suits their purpose.

I am tired of being fed politically oriented sermons and having to hear of the multitude of conspiracies that are out to get me. And while I do not disagree with the philosophy of the John Birch Society, I do expect Church centered, Catholic philosophy from priests. I do not like my donations being used to fly priests to political rallies in Colorado (or elsewhere for that matter).

I grow tired of arrogant young priests looking down their noses at us, telling us they don’t have to give us reasons for their actions because “we are priests”. I do not like them pointing out people from the pulpit for public correction. I do not like to be told that my only use is to put my collection envelope in the basket, keep my mouth shut, and don’t ask any questions!

It is shocking that the faithful are denied the sacraments because of a personality conflict with a priest.

It is a scandal too, when the faithful are not permitted to attend Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of obligation because they are forbidden to do so by the order of an arrogant, egotistical superior. This is precisely what happened at the Virginia chapel when Father Hodgson was not allowed to celebrate Sunday Mass. Is this not an abuse of authority? Is this not exactly like the Novus Ordo?

I object to the high living and extravagant social habits of these priests who frequent top-rate restaurants, indulge in expensive imported wines and liquors, and strut around in custom-made clothes.

I object to the excessive drinking habits of our priests who have been seen intoxicated in public. The beer parties held by the seminary rector at Michigan with the seminariazis are well known among the congregation there. It disgusts me to hear the seminary rector constantly speaking of homosexuality and hearing of how he suspects it among all the students there. Is it any wonder that the place is empty and that students leave at such alarming rates?

I do not like going to the house at Oyster Bay and three times out of four having to be confronted with the district superior’s brother who is in charge of things there and who is in a perpetual state of plain old drunkenness. I do not like him calling me on the phone in the same condition heaping abuse and filthy language on me.

I object to the high wages being paid to these priests along with rain, and all other extras. Each is paid two to three hundred dollars per-month.

I cannot justify Rev. Dan Dolan telling us constantly from the pulpit, privately, and in letters, that the Pope is a dirty Jew or that he is the anti-Christ. Many of us do not like to have the person and office of the Pope attacked day after day without end. Especially when no proof is ever offered to support his weird theories. We have lost hundreds of new members because of his imprudent actions. Fr. Dolan (and other Society priests) will never accept the Pope, any Pope, because they are too busy doing their own thing. They are busy setting up monuments to themselves at the cost of traditional Catholics of America, They have gone over the edge and are doing the same as the modernists and liberals.

There is never a month, a week, no, not even a day that goes by that we are not badgered for money. Weekly letters, duplicates from both New York and Michigan arrive constantly. Each letter contains a limit-less assortment of envelopes for funds. The Society newsletter is called For You and For Many, but most call it For You and For Money. Money has become a Cod, the sole object for the existence of the Society and its district superior. There are the constant scandals caused because of incredible prices ($250.00 per person) for banquets! Also, renting costly facilities for gatherings where one pays only for the name.

Some priests make it quite plain that if you are not wealthy, they want nothing to do with you. Services and sacraments are sold, or given in accordance to one’s ability to contribute financially. Those who are poor are ignored.

Letters to Society headquarters are never answered and phone calls are never returned. Father Bolduc in Texas is the only priest from whom I can ever get an answer. At the New York school, children are turned against their parents. Parents who have difficulties with the priests are subject to having their children harassed in school or the children are forced to leave.

Father Dolan openly states that the seminary in Econe does not properly educate or train its priests. Yet, he is a product of that same seminary. Fr. Sanborn and Fr. Cekada openly state that the seminary in Switzerland is liberal and controlled by French rebels,

There is the recent wasteful spending of thousands of dollars monthly on advertisements of a Society publication entitled The Roman Catholic in airline publications where pictures of the holy Saint Pius X share the same pages with vulgar stories, dirty jokes, and adds depicting nude or partially nude men and women. If the Society of St. Pius X can afford thousands each month to advertise a theological magazine in an airline flight magazine, then they do not need my small one hundred dollar a month donation.

Those visiting Armada are taken for a tour of the rooms filled with supposed works of art (junk for the most part) which were purchased for thousands of dollars to decorate the seminary. Enormous sums of money are being spent at a whim. One lady, knowledgeable in art, who saw the “art”, said that it consisted mostly of cheap copies and reproductions, and was greatly misrepresented, having no value at all.

I could of course go on, the list is endless… Enough is enough.

Hm. Sounds like the Reformation.

Can't anyone, Catholic or otherwise walk into any church and attend mass? It's not like you have a "Banned" sticky label on your shirt.

He’s not even really complaining about the SSPX. If he’s talking about Dolan, Kelly et al., then he’s talking about people who left the SSPX 30 years ago. They have very Protestant attitudes.

Kelly and Dolan broke away from the SSPX in 1983 to form the SSPV (which Dolan eventually left).

I did, and as I said, this isn’t “even really complaining about the SSPX. If he’s talking about Dolan, Kelly et al., then he’s talking about people who left the SSPX 30 years ago.”

I know that. I said that: “If he’s talking about Dolan, Kelly et al., then he’s talking about people who left the SSPX 30 years ago.”

I'm trying to figure out what your point is in posting a blogpost by a pretend "Pope," reprinting a 35-year-old article rejecting a quasi-schismatic Catholic group, specifically because of the antics of two priests, both of whom left the aforementioned quasi-schismatic group and became completely schismatic, just like "Pope Michael" is.

Contrary to what Gamecock said, most (all?) of the people involved with this aren't Catholics at all.

...you can’t discern why flippant Protestants would post derogatory commentary about Catholics...?

It's called "presenting a different viewpoint". The Religion Forum has played maternity ward for the birth of at least two schismatic Catholic groups in the last 18 months, and I thought a little introspection and historical perspective might be good for all involved.

There's that, and anything "Pope Michael" is always good for a laugh.
