Vatican City, Jul 31, 2014 / 05:01 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The Congregation for Divine Worship, in a recent circular letter, announced that the placement of the sign of peace within Mass will not change, though it suggested several ways the rite could be performed with greater dignity.
The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments pronounced in favor of maintaining the 'rite' and 'sign' of peace in the place it has now in the Ordinary of the Mass, Fr. Jose Maria Gil Tamayo, secretary general of the Spanish bishops' conference, related in a July 28 memo.
He noted that this was done out of consideration of the placement of the rite of peace as a characteristic of the Roman rite, and not believing it to be suitable for the faithful to introduce structural changes in the Eucharistic Celebration, at this time.
The sign of peace is made after the consecration and just prior to the reception of Communion; it had been suggested that it be moved so that it would precede the presentation of the gifts.
Fr. Gil's memo was sent to the Spanish bishops, and prefaced the Congregation for Divine Worship's circular letter, which was signed June 8 by Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, its prefect, and its secretary, Archbishop Arthur Roche. The circular had been approved and confirmed the previous day by Pope Francis.
The letter made four concrete suggestions about how the dignity of the sign of peace could be maintained against abuses.
Fr. Gil explained that the circular letter is a fruit of the 2005 synod of bishops on the Eucharist, in which the possibility of moving the rite was discussed.
During the Synod of Bishops there was discussion about the appropriateness of greater restraint in this gesture, which can be exaggerated and..........

“Yet the theology of the Eucharist itself is a perversion of Scripture”
And you know more than all the Church fathers and 2,000 years of Christian practices, started BY CHRIST HIMSELF!
You’re right, just like there are a lot of “cooties” in any protestant church.
If I go to a Catholic Mass and see people acting like protestants I never go back. I refuse to hold someone’s hands like I’m at a 1965 hippy commune. It’s 100% protestant crap that should be immediately ceased at all Catholic Churches.
In a recent Mass, a visiting family sitting closer to the front shook hands with everyone around them during the sign of peace, then the family all passed around and used a small hand sanitizer before going up for Communion.
Not during the Our Father.
I find the discrete bowing done in the Orient at the sign of peace much more reverent and less intrusive than the handshaking and backslapping prevalent in US parishes.
I hear you. The church I attend does this couple minutes of greeting people and shaking hands in the middle of the service, which I find very disruptive and honestly, hypocritical.
People will come up and smile and shake my hand who otherwise, have never and do not, give me the time of day otherwise.
I can live without their hypocrisy. If they can't be bothered to talk to me outside of that two minutes of the service, don't bother then either.
I am also beginning to wonder about the wisdom of that considering the circumstances out country is finding itself in between the possibilities of an Ebola outbreak, and the disease that is coming in over the borders with the hugh influx of illegals.
If this isn’t a classic example of missing the forest for the trees I don’t know what is.
Yes, I knew it was an evangelical thing. It sucks.
That’s silly and dangerous for your soul!! You were just looking for an excuse not to go to Mass. Just walk out before the “sign of peace” ( I hate it also) and come back after it’s over. You let something ridiculous possible cost your soul eternity in heaven......re-think PLEASE!
Wishful thinking. You simply do not know what all the "Church fathers" wrote, (and which are not fathers of the NT church, and in fact it is estimated that what is publicly available is only a small percentage of what they wrote), while this is not necessarily a salvific error by itself.
But in any case, Catholic CFs are not determinative of Truth, who Rome judges them more than they judge her, as she presumes her (non-inspired) words are the supreme authority. But which is the fundamental error of Rome, as a perpetual assuredly infallible magisterium is nowhere promised in Scripture, or necessary for God to provide and preserve Truth.
Instead, it is the wholly inspired-of-God words of Scripture - which all Rome's "infallible" words are not - that are what are determinative of Truth, and which does not teach the endocannibalism of Rome, as has been shown here many times.
And indeed it is a form of endocannibalism.
Alpers and Lindenbaums research conclusively demonstrated that kuru [neurological disorder] spread easily and rapidly in the Fore people due to their endocannibalistic funeral practices, in which relatives consumed the bodies of the deceased to return the life force of the deceased to the hamlet, a Fore societal subunit. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuru_%28disease%29#Transmission
Moreover, "the custom of eating bread sacramentally as the body of a god was practised by the Aztecs before the discovery and conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards." - http://www.bartleby.com/196/121.html
I was at a very reverently done solemn high EF Mass the other night where the assembled clerics & seminarians in choir did this; it's certainly a licit option in the Latin Rite.
Yes, for disease prevention, handshaking/handholding should be discouraged and also Communion under the species of wine using a shared cup should be out.
People assume the "orans" position that the priest uses during the Lord's Prayer. The Roman Missal indicates this posture for the priest in the rubrics but in some parishes the congregation assumes it also. Then hands are raised even higher when the prayer is completed.
It's a hold over from part of the charismatic movement. There is nothing in the rubrics that says anyone other than the priest is to assume "orans".
Whatever it is, it looks stupid.
We have hand-sanitizer for all the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to use before handling the Blessed Sacrament.
If the cup is served properly it can all be sanitary. The pruificator needs to drape from the hand of the EMHC, and after each sip a new portation of the purficator is used, the cup is rotate 1/4 for every recipient.
New space on the purificator, new space on the cup each time. I’ve had to stop and refold the pruficator.
?
I have a hard time getting too worked up about it but don't participate in it myself.
Contemporary worship music (CWM) is a loosely defined genre of Christian music used in contemporary worship. It has developed over the past sixty years and is stylistically similar to pop music. The songs are frequently referred to as "praise songs" or "worship songs" and are typically led by a "worship band" or "praise team", with either a guitarist or pianist leading.

Interestingly, in Milan (Italy) this is when the sign of peace occurs.
Apparently for some old historical reason, that dioceses has been given special permission (or dispensation) to celebrate the Mass in a slightly different way even though it is still Catholic (of the Latin Rite).
