Is The Latin Mass Worse Than Child Rape?
The American Conservative ^ | 7/13/14 | Rod Dreher

Michael Brendan Dougherty writes in praise of Pope Benedict XVI for establishing that the Tridentine Mass (also known as the “Latin Mass,” or the “Old Mass”) is always and everywhere licit. The papal ruling came in a document titled Summorum Pontificum. MBD says — rightly in my view — that even nonbelievers ought to be grateful for the old mass’s comeback, because it has inspired so much beautiful art over the centuries. In his 1980s book Once A Catholic, the writer Peter Occhiogrosso interviewed a number of prominent, or semi-prominent, people who are or who once were Catholics, about their life in the Church. One of the most surprising things about it when I read the book as a brand-new Catholic was how many people interviewed in the book — even an ex-Catholic like the avant-garde rock musician Frank Zappa — missed the old mass.

Anyway, MBD, who is himself a Traditionalist, writes that the pope’s intervention did not save his parish:

Summorum came too late to save that community in Poughkeepsie. In the New York Archdiocese as then ruled by Cardinal Edward Egan, the offense of saying this Mass and publishing tracts in its favor was treated as a far more serious crime and scandal than clerical pederasty.

In prehistoric times (prior to 1960), Latin was a required HS course in the college prep curriculum (curriculum is a Latin word btw).

"....intolerable because it challenges the ideological optimism of the conciliar mindset."

What does the author mean by "ideological optimism"?

Interesting, that.....

Someone needs to get their priorities straight.

Well, because from all evidence, the priest saying the Latin mass provokes a more serious response from the hierarchy than the priest who has been molesting boys.

That's not the issue - the issue is bishops condemning the Latin Mass. (I agree that the title is a little confusing.)

Unless the high schools and seminaries start teaching it again no matter what the Pope authorises it will not happen. The vast majority of today’s priests do not know Latin and cannot say a Latin based mass.

With the Mass said in Latin- ALL OVER THE WORLD

There would be no deviation from church to church-

Can’t understand latin?- pick up the Hymnal- it will have

(well at least USED to HAVE)

Latin and the English translation of what is being said-
Spanish - + translation
French - + translation
etc.

Sometimes I think this was a plot by the Evil One to
destroy the unity of the Church

Nowadays classical knowlwdge is a rare thing. The educationist ideologues believed that a large body of Americans who know how to think in civilizational terms would be a threat to their interests.

I still miss the Latin Mass.

I was a graduate student when I served my last Latin Mass in 1964.

Exactly. This is typical Novus Ordo excuses and whining.

The Evil One, with the help of much of the Modernist hierarchy.

I think he's talking about the zeitgeist during the Council. Think JFK and the New Frontier. John XXIII and Let's Open the Windows. MLK Jr's Dream. The Race to the Moon. The Peace Corps. Whether real or imagined, there was a palpable sense of post-WWII optimism, especially among the WWII generation and their kids. They were heady times.

The "no Latin, no way, no how" crowd are nostalgic progressives. And like all progressives, insufferable and intolerant bullies.

The Bible says, "Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you, and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven"

Frank Zappa — missed the old mass.

Brown shoes don't make it. English Mass, can't take it.

Having been raised in the post-Conciliar Church in the nineteen-seventies, it was with unbridled joy, of my head, heart and mind, that I ‘discovered’ the sublime Tridentine Mass. It’s not just the Latin, but the rubrics which evolved over a thousand years. This traditionalism/tribalism has done more for my soul than forty years of the Ordinary Form. Took my mom (b.1936) to here first TLM in forty years a month ago. One of the great pleasures to give back, at least for one Sunday, the patrimony that was stolen from Catholics by the prelates at Vatican II.

And? Does that mean overlooking evil within your midst?

Does that mean chastising priests who say a Latin mass and moving around to protect homosexual priests who are molesting boys?

What fellowship does light have with darkness?

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, it saying: 2 Son of man, prophesy concerning the shepherds of Israel: prophesy, and say to the shepherds: Thus saith the Lord God: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, that fed themselves: should not the flocks be fed by the shepherds? 3 You ate the milk, and you clothed yourselves with the wool, and you killed that which was fat: but my flock you did not feed. 4 The weak you have not strengthened, and that which was sick you have not healed, that which was broken you have not bound up, and that which was driven away you have not brought again, neither have you sought that which was lost: but you ruled over them with rigour, and with a high hand. 5 And my sheep were scattered, because there was no shepherd and they became the prey of all the beasts of the field, and were scattered. 6 My sheep have wandered in every mountain, and in every high hill: and my flocks were scattered upon the face of the earth, and there was none that sought them, there was none, I say, that sought them. 7 Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8 As I live, saith the Lord God, forasmuch as my flocks have been made a spoil, and my sheep are become a prey to all the beasts of the field, because there was no shepherd: for my shepherds did not seek after my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flocks: 9 Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I myself come upon the shepherds, I will require my flock at their hand, and I will cause them to cease from feeding the flock any more, neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more: and I will deliver my flock from their mouth, and it shall no more be meat for them.

Ezekiel 34

I say we print off a few dozen copies of that, get some nails and hit up some cathedral doors.
