Fears for the health of Pope Francis have surfaced after he canceled two days of engagements.

Following an intense working weekend, the 77-year-old decided not to hold Mass in Santa Marta this morning and canceled his appointments for the rest of the day.

He had already had advisers clear his schedule yesterday to rest, after hosting a diplomatically tricky prayer meeting with the Israeli and Palestinian presidents on Sunday. […]

(H)e has some underlying health problems, including sciatica, a back problem, and is missing most of one lung due to an infection in his youth.

Some observers have claimed the pontiff has gained weight since his election and is having difficulty breathing, which could be a sign of a heart condition. …

One Mass cancelled and one day off and the media hits the panic button? Really? I guy can’t take a day off?

Obama told them to push this story to take people's minds off the Bergdahl fiasco. [haw]

My grandmother was cleaning offices in her 80s. And it was not discovered until after she died that she had only one functioning kidney.

Who is next in line if the pope steps down or worse?

Would it be his sec. of state?

Three popes?

There is no next in line for the papacy; hence, people were shocked when Bergoglio (Francis) was selected; he had been in the running when Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) was selected, but most thought he was too old and on the way out. Bergoglio was “only” an archbishop of Buenos Aires. Likewise Wojtyla (John Paul II) was “only” an archbishop of Gdansk.

If you want to be afraid of someone becoming pope, look to the anti-free-market Maradiago of Honduras. Not that he’s considered one of the favorites.

FYI: Sec of state is 2nd behind Pope in the curia, but while there is no Pope, the Dean of the College of Cardinals handles things. Coincidentally, that’s a retired Secretary of State, Angelo Sodano.

That I don’t know. However, I think, given the chance, there are millions of qualified bishops to serve on an interim basis. Most would consider it the honor of their lifetimes.
These honorable men must be separated from those who would want to serve in this capacity mainly for the ego boost or material gains at their disposal.

I was wanting to test the waters to see if anyone would throw out the Malachy prophecy.

So, the sec. of state is named Peter and he is from Rome.

Peter the Roman. lol I dunno, kinda creepy

Good for your mom, but everyone is not alike. 77 is old, older for some than for others. My great aunt climbed stairs and did sewing until she was 113 but that doesn’t mean I will. My husband is 79 and he could not keep up the Pope’s schedule.

Each person has a number of days to live.....It is not a matter of being ‘old’ or not. It is a matter of living it to the best of your ability

You do realize that “abilities” differ. Just because some people are healthy and active in their 70’s and 80’s doesn't mean that everyone is.
