Fears for the health of Pope Francis have surfaced after he canceled two days of engagements.

Following an intense working weekend, the 77-year-old decided not to hold Mass in Santa Marta this morning and canceled his appointments for the rest of the day.

He had already had advisers clear his schedule yesterday to rest, after hosting a diplomatically tricky prayer meeting with the Israeli and Palestinian presidents on Sunday. […]

(H)e has some underlying health problems, including sciatica, a back problem, and is missing most of one lung due to an infection in his youth.

Some observers have claimed the pontiff has gained weight since his election and is having difficulty breathing, which could be a sign of a heart condition. …

From the article:

'So I think that during August he’s going to retire to rest.'

Oh, man, don't start that again.

The press is more full of fiction than most novels or TV shows.

This Pope may be bold and confident enough to establish his own traditions of the rare vacation and more leisurely routines. The schedule is very demanding for any mortal, Pope Francis has my total respect and admiration. I see nothing wrong with him taking a three week period off to live in private twice a year. This would be the time to make use of Pope Benedict still being available. Many christians would not like it, because they don’t see the Pontiff as someone subject to physical exhaustion like any other earthly being.

If he knew what his job really is, he would know that he doesn’t have to be on camera every minute, jetting around to pray in front of anti-Semitic graffiti, etc.

If he would make a two-minute phone call telling Cardinal Wuerl to stop committing the mortal sin of giving Communion to Nancy Pelosi, it would be a good day’s work.

Ok, it isn’t tin foil Thursday, and most Popes are older men, but part of me wonders if the election of two frail and failing Popes was done on purpose.
