A pair of topless women stormed the podium then wrestled with RCMP officers as a crowd of pro-life demonstrators organizers pegged at 23,000 were listening to a papal message about the sanctity of life Thursday.
"F--- your morals," the pair screamed at the annual March for Life on Parliament Hill, one waving a placard reading "My Body, My Rules."
"God out of my vagina," was scrawled on a young woman's bare back as she was led away by police and loaded into an SUV.
But Cardinal Gerald Cyprien Lacroix, archbishop of Quebec, barely paused.
Pope Francis "prays that this event fosters greater respect for the inviolable right to life of each person, from conception to natural death," Lacroix said alongside women holding signs saying "I Regret My Abortion." Laurence Bergeron-Michaud said that she and the duo -- arrested for causing a disturbance but later released with trespass notices -- are from FEMEN Canada, part of the international feminist movement known for topless protests.
"We're here to protest against those religious groups that think that abortion should be banned," she said. "We're here to say that women can choose by themselves, we're here to fight for our freedom.
"We're here to fight for all the women in Canada," she added, pointing to provinces where it's hard to get an abortion and Parliamentarians who have tried to revive the debate.
March spokesman Jack Fonseca said it's proof opponents are more interested in "drowning out our message" -- this year a bid to keep Health Canada from approving a drug known as RU-486 that induces early abortions -- than discussion.
"They just want to rant and rave and attract attention, shock people," he said. "They don't care about human rights, they don't care about the babies being killed, they don't care about the women who are going to die if this drug gets approved.
"All they care about is perpetuating the sexual revoluation that abortion permits."
"RU-4Life?" -- a reference to the drug -- asked a banner hoisted by Catholic high school students, who then marched through downtown streets with a crowd including stroller-pushing families and clerics.
Jim Hughes of the Campaign Life Coalition said the pro-life movement has succeeded in keeping the "human pesticide" out of Canada before but the bigger goal of the mostly-young demonstrators is stopping abortion entirely.
"We're going to be here until fighting until all abortions are stopped -- regardless of whether they're chemical or surgical," he said.
Julie Lalonde, who was along the march route with the pro-choice Radical Handmaids, said that people who don't want women to have control over their own bodies are spreading myths about the "safe and effective" pill that Health Canada has been slow to approve though it's long been used in the U.S.
Her group was handing out condoms and information, hoping to reach thousands of youth bussed in to the march and hearing "misinformation" and "lies" about abortion and contraception.
"For us, it's really important to be there to show them there are other sides -- that they should think for themselves," Lalonde said.
