The New York Times ^ | April 3,2014 | Michael Paulson

So why now? Because of the new pope? Does that say that opulence is okay if no one notices or no one says anything?

no... but they had not noticed it before... now that someone has pointed it out and has set the example, they can follow...

when someone is reprimanded or reproved for something, his response to the correction is what i find telling about that person's walk with Christ... does he defend his ways? resist the correction? or respond with remorse, conviction, humility?

So why now?

Attributing all of this to the Holy Father may be misleading.

There are significant financial problems in many of the dioceses in the United States. Some have realized bankruptcy due to clergy abuse issues and some remain under this same threat. There has been financial mismanagement or outright theft by employees in places like Philadelphia. Donations are declining due to reduced Mass attendance, changing demographics, moral stances on contraceptives and the like, and a general societal hostility to religion.

Discerning what is the result of the work of the evil one in the world versus what is simple human malevolence/incompetence can be difficult. The example set by the Pope may be of some assistance in all of this. Nonetheless, there are a variety of other issues that come into play here.

Every one who has said over the years anything about the expensive life style of the clergy especially regarding Catholics has mostly been ignored so why now?

Tradition has completely taken the place of what Jesus taught, why has,nt it been recognized before now? if it is really the Church of Christ why was it ever started?

So now they are selling their mansions and will still live in luxury such as the average person who supports them can only dream of.

It is mind boggling to even try to figure out where this all came from, it sure did not come from anything Jesus said.

Excellent move and long overdue. The leadership in our Church has been behaving like medieval royalty for far too long. I have always admired our local Bishop as when he assumed the position, he moved into a simple apartment in a seminary and put the mansion up for sale.

I remember the vaunted late Monsignor Charles Owen Rice...the “Labor Priest”, always agitating on behalf of “the 99%”. He was only seen driving high-end German automobiles.
