Pope Francis named his first batch of cardinals Sunday, choosing 19 men from around the world, including the developing nations of Haiti and Burkina Faso, in line with his belief the church must pay more attention to the poor.
But advocates for victims of sex abuse by Catholic clergy said they felt let down that Francis didn't unequivocally embrace their calls that prelates who hadn't made a clean break with past practices of covering up pedophile behavior never be promoted.
Francis read out the 19 names to a crowd of tens of thousands in St. Peter's Square....

Notice something missing from this list? Guess no evil capitalists from the U.S. can qualify for a Cardinal from this point on. Except for the occasional token bone thrown our way. Too rich. Of course, the U.S. contributes more money (virtually double) to the Catholic Church than any other country, and without us, the Vatican would be in dire straits. But hey, we’re still capitalist pigs to Pope Francis, with no concern for the poor, doncha know. Pope Francis will be rapidly stacking the deck to guarantee another socialist Pope in the future.
“Notice something missing from this list?”
Not really since the U.S. already has a number of cardinals:
- Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, Roman Curia
Daniel Nicholas Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, Texas
Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, New York
Francis Eugene Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, Illinois
James Michael Cardinal Harvey, Archpriest of the Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura {Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls Basilica}, Roman Curia Maggiore {Saint Mary Major Basilica}, Roman Curia
William Joseph Cardinal Levada, Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Roman Curia
Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony, Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles, California
Edwin Frederick Cardinal OBrien, Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Roman Curia
Sean Patrick Cardinal OMalley, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Boston, Massachusetts
Justin Francis Cardinal Rigali, Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Donald William Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, District of Columbia
Brazil has only ten cardinals:

So, we have more cardinals than the mostly Catholic nation of Brazil. Brazil has almost twice as many Catholics as the USA does.
Popes should be required to know something about Catholicism. ;-)

“So, we have more cardinals than the mostly Catholic nation of Brazil. Brazil has almost twice as many Catholics as the USA does.”
Brazil is only one of 19. I don’t begrudge Brazil a cardinal. I point out the lack of a single American being appointed Cardinal by this new Pope. I think it was intentional, and I doubt you can convince me otherwise, in light of what the Pope has said about our capitalist ways in this country.
How many cardinals do Poland and the Philippines have? I understand that they are probably the most Marian societies on Earth.
I don’t like most of the appointments either. One of the other countries that has always been a backbone of the Church, Spain, also got nobody except a very elderly, nonvoting retired bishop. It’s lovely to have more Third World Cardinals, but I don’t think he needed to exclude the others. Chaput should have been made a cardinal, but I think he’s probably too conservative for the Vatican right now. It’s a pity, Francis could’ve appointed the first North American Indian cardinal.
But I don’t think you understand what I’m saying:
1) What American bishop would have been made a cardinal when a bunch have been made a cardinal in just a few years?
2) How many American cities which used to have cardinals lack them now? Only one or two.
3) Two Americans were named cardinals in 2012 that I recall.
4) I don’t see any evidence that this pope holds our capitalism against our bishops.
Not exactly sure. These are the cardinals listed on Catholic Hierarchy:
http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/country/bpl8.html
There may be more, but I guess those are the ones who are still active as bishops or at least can vote in a conclave.
Philippines’ living cardinals:

Methinks you are naive about this Pope. He has a liberation theology agenda. You will see. And this was the first time this new Pope could name cardinals, and he chose not to pick an American one, very intentionally I believe. We must agree to disagree.
This Pope is downright creepy.
Focus more on the poor? Good grief! The cradle-to-grave bankrupt Western democracies have done nothing but focus on the poor over the last 100 years.
The real cause of poverty is moral depravity, promiscuous sex, militant feminism, and the collapse and shrinkage of the family. Yet the Pope (and the Baptist leader, for that matter) tell us not to obsess over abortion and gay marriage.
I have no idea why you posted that to me.
“Its lovely to have more Third World Cardinals, but I dont think he needed to exclude the others.”
I’m sorry, I don’t think its lovely, as those 3rd world cardinals will vote for a socialist Pope the next time around. Nothing good can come of this. What was primarily a European Christian religion (although it started in the Middle East initially, but from thereon it was European for over a thousand years) will become a watered down, politically correct non-European based wishy washy third world religion. It is my worst fear, and not an unfounded one.
Posted to the group at large. Although you did seem a little defensive about our scatter-brained pope.
