We were going to rename the President and first lady as ‘Ahab’ and ‘Jezebel’.

As a kid, I hated my name. I never once, ever met any one else with my name. Playground taunts were constant. I would cringe whenever my mother stood on the porch, and screeched my name, telling me to come inside and wash up for supper. The neighborhood would suddenly erupt with every kid mimicking her call. To make it worse, I was a “junior.” My entire life, I only met one other that shared my name. It was a Basset hound. Perfect name for a Basset hound, come to think of it.

When I was in seminary, and one of the guys was about to become a dad, we would joke that he should name the kid Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz ("Quick to the plunder, swift to the spoil"). Hey, it's a biblical name!
My daughter's name is Anna, a good biblical name.

My first grandchild (due in June) is Adah. We haven’t decided on a middle name yet. Any suggestions? We are so excited!

I like the pagan Scandinavian names. With names like Thor (thunder) and Hilda (battle), you can go through life kicking a.

Over the past few years, she said, parents have been experimenting with baby names by inventing names and using bizarre spellings. I named my son a biblical name because I wanted him to have a decent, traditional name, vs. one of the ridiculous names considered "popular". I've heard some names that are truly cringe-worthy.
My mother thought it appropriate to make my first and middle names sond "cute" together. In reality, they sound atrocious together. What might seem "cute" for a baby doesn't sound so cute when the guy is in his 40s.

But please no more Zachary's or Joshua's.
Every other guy I met in the 90's was called Zack or Josh.

Biblical names are nice, as are old standards like Kathryn and William.
I know a nice black woman who does numerology, she’s really upset with the names black women give their poor babies, like N’kneisump. They have nothing to live up to.

Biblical names have never not been popular. Some more than others, obviously. A few more unusual or not-so-often-heard ones that I like for boys: Thaddeus, Ephraim, Gabriel, Jericho, Japheth & Raphael. For girls: Jael, Dinah & Lydia.

I doubt that Pope Francis has anything to do with it. Of the five names listed above, only Abigail is non-biblical, I believe.
Last year Jacob and Sophia were the favorites. They are both biblical. I have a friend whose one-year-old grandson is named Elijah. Now that is truly and ancient, prophetic name!
