The controversy over Phil Robertsons comments about homosexuality remind us of the consequences of a public figure speaking their true thoughts about modern morality. It also shows us the selective nature of censorship. Heres how.
Robertson is the CEO of Duck Commander company and one of the family stars of the popular television series Duck Dynasty. He is a Christian and like many of his Southern neighbors is not ashamed or afraid to state his beliefs in clear language. While giving an interview to GQ magazine he quoted from 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 where the apostle Paul clearly showed the consequences of not only homosexual behavior but other sins. Here is what the passage says. Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Paul runs the table on sinful actions in this passage. Theres enough there to offend just about everyone. All immorality including adultery and fornication (sex before marriage) is sin. Greed, theft, alcoholism and even loose lips can get us in trouble with God. But the media uproar and Robertsons suspension from his television show is because he made remarks about gay morality and in todays sexual oriented culture thats taboo. Robertson could have rightfully shown how this scripture applies to tax fraud and no one would have blinked an eye. But today, if you take on the gay agenda in a prominent public manner you are open to immediate retribution.
This is shameless hypocrisy!
Pope Francis graces the cover of Time magazine as their Person of the Year. Pope Francis accepts the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, which is that it is a spiritual sin condemned by scripture. Yet no one is screaming against Time for naming the Pope the most prominent person of the year. But the Pope is not a Southern white male representing a rather gender specific pasttime like shooting cute birds out of the sky.
I read the GQ article. It profiles the kind of man I have met many times through the years. A baby boomer product of a post World War II America who self-corrected his life after a series of mishaps. Robertson, like many other men of his time, deeply believes he found God after many years of dissolute living. His redemption extends to doing good works where he can and promoting values he sees as vital to the survival of the America he once knew. He believes he is right. His advantage over others is his money and notoriety give him a large tree stump on which to stand and promote his ideas. No one can fault him for that. Its the American way.
Here is what Phil Robertson, GQ magazine, gays, thieves, drunkards and all the rest of us should stop and consider. Unless we all repent and believe the true gospel of Jesus Christ we will not inherit the kingdom of God. Unless we submit ourselves to the personal rule of Jesus Christ in our life we stand in danger of the exact judgment Paul describes to Christians in Corinth.
Robertson, his fellow bornagain evangelicals and the clever sophisticated mavens of popular culture could look deeper into the Bible to understand the transforming impact of the gospel.
God is not selective in His censorship of sin. Neither should we be.
The speech and thought police are out in full force and MSNBC and the rest are there posse especially when they broadcast speaking verse from the bible is despicable ..

The Advocate (Flaming Gay Magazine) also named the Pope as their Man of the Year. I wonder how many times the Pope has also quoted 1 Corinthians?
Hypocrisy Indeed!
My own feeling: A&E is taking everyone for a PR ride on this. I doubt many gays or leftists watch “Duck Dynasty” anyway. Gays are not a TV demographic anyway.
But conservatives are - and a huge one at that. What better way to increase the recognition of the show among its target audience than by involving their main character in a manufactured controversy over homosexuality?
In show-biz the only bad PR is no PR.
I agree with you to a point, but what are we to do beside remain silent?
I firmly believe that remaining silent is what got America and Christianity into the mess we are in now.
There could be something to that. But I do not believe folks in the industry are that smart. If this ends up helping their ratings, they will have lucked into it when they "re-hire" the star. However, if the family Ducks out and goes elsewhere... well, oops!
Hollywood is littered with bad business decisions. I think they must be hitting about 90% buy now.
I personally don't think this was the plan. A&E are just like anyone on TV. They are deathly afraid of the perceived power that the homosexual lobby has.
I think THEY think that people watch the show to laugh at the Robertsons when in reality they watch it to inspired by them.
Forgive me, but what exactly makes you think Phil Robertson doesn’t already understand the transformative nature of the Gospel?
My thanks goes out to Phil Robertson!!
It’s time for MORE decent, traditional values Americans Christian and Jewish to stand up to the PC/diversity (so long as you AGREE WITH US)/tolerance (IF YOU DON’T TOLERATE OUR WARPED VALUES AND OUR EFFORTS TO TURN THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN WE WILL DESTROY YOU) HYPOCRITES and tell them that the resistance has finally begun!
It’s not going to be long before King Obama invites Phil to the White House for a Beer Summit.
This has to be a “teachable” moment, and he would love to lecture Phil about how he needs to “evolve”.
and judging by our talk show hosts, we can expect little sympathy from our libertarian friends. They defend the right of A&E, when of course A&E is hostage to a legal system that makes suspect all criticism of homosexuality.
I guarantee you - A&E will wind up "re-hiring" their star. He may not be "contrite" when he returns, but that will only add to the allure. Network people are whores for viewers, and this show will now have more than ever. They have pure PR gold on their hands, and they will bring back Phil, Duck Dynasty and the whole crew to A LOT of fanfare.
I always have valued your opinion. What do I say to my Facebook so called friends who are saying that yes Robinson did have free speech...he used it. But Free Speech is for Government and you don’t see Robinson getting arrested or charged criminally in anyway. Also Free Speech works both ways and A&E also have free speech to fire and hire anyone they want when they go against the networks beliefs. I am stumped that they through government into the mix saying that Free Speech is really the government and not private enterprise. UGH!
I think that depending on the contractual situation, the Duck boys (and families) will fly en masse. They idolize Phil...they always call him “the Calvalry” when one of their stupid ideas goes wrong. I know it’s TV and all a setup, but genuine, none the less. I think the Ducksters and A&E are done...not that this is their first brushup. Hopefully Phil advised all of them on their contract and foresaw this happening giving them an out. F-— A&E!
However, if the family Ducks out and goes elsewhere... well, oops!
That won’t happen until the contract is up. Well unless they pay a huge monetary agreement to get out of the contract. I am sure there are clauses upon clauses in the contract that both sides signed.
Use that word, INTOLERANCE. Throw it in their faces.
Hold them to their own standards. Make them own it.
I remember Obama inviting someone to the White House for a beer but for the life of me, I can’t remember who that was and why. Do you remember?
Maybe A&E has free speech, but the difference is that if Phil had said “Allah commands me to shoot all homos”, do you think they would have fired him? He maybe would have gotten an award after being preached to by the self-anointed. So he quotes Bible verse in an interview with GQ (not A&E) and he’s fired! If that is not violation of free speech, what is?
The police officer and the Harvard professor he busted.
