Sec. of State John Kerry spoke Sunday about losing his faith in God while a soldier in the Vietnam War, then returning to his Catholic faith after an "epiphany" that suffering is part of God's plan.
After the Vietnam War shook his faith, correspondent Martha Raddatz asked on ABC's "This Week," "how did you get that back?"

My daughter is a student at Georgetown University. She attends the 11:00 a.m. Mass in Georgetown’s Dahlgren chapel every Sunday. She recently told me that Kerry is there almost every Sunday. The chance that a Georgetown Priest will refuse the Eucharist to Kerry is less than 0%.

I don't know if it's God's ‘plan’ per se, but Scripture does state that one of the fruits of the Spirit is longsuffering (Galatians 5:22-23).
For those who refuse to place their trust in the finished work of Christ, I would say suffering is merely the human condition (just my own opinion).
