Interesting that John Wayne, who directed the film The Alamo, would have a religious debate just before the final battle scene. However, as I have written in a post which may be read here, John Wayne, death bed Catholic convert, had a strong faith in God, even as he realized that in many ways he was not living properly. The film The Alamo was first and foremost Wayne’s love note to America, but I think Wayne was also making a statement about faith in God.
Wayne’s personal relationship with God is represented well in this clip, beginning at 9:26, that did not make it into the film.

Not many people realize he converted to Catholicism.
He was married three times....all three times to women of Hispanic and Catholic heritage. Certainly a factor in him being familiar with Catholicism and visa versa.
His grandson is a priest.

I have a funny story about John Wayne and his conversion but I am too tired to type it now, remind me and since I will have more time next week, I will tell you the story.

When he was at USC he used to party with the team at DH’s first cousin once removed’s house. He came to pay a condolence call at DH’s uncle’s house since they were both OSS. I went to university with a granddaughter. He would be interesting to meet.
This story was told to us a couple of years ago by Fr Kenneth Baker, SJ (the one who got thrown out at Gonzaga for being Catholic).
He began by reminding us that more things are wrought by prayer than we know.
It seems that he has a priest friend whose father was an immigrant from Italy who grew to love his adopted country. One of the things he loved most was John Wayne.
One day he said to his son the priest, "Wouldn't it be great if John Wayne became a Catholic"? His son replied, "Well, sure Dad, but there are many impediments". He meant JW's multiple marriages.
"Still, Son, I am going to pray a rosary everyday for John Wayne to become Catholic".
His son smiled and left it all in the Hands of God.
Well, we know the end of the story, a death bed conversion and a grandson who is a priest in Orange County.
Fr Munoz is not assigned in Huntington Beach.
However, Fr Karcher is....Fr Karcher son of Carl Karcher...Carls Jr.

The Duke as Davy Crockett. Great movie. I remember the speech well without even watching the clip. I own the movie and have witched it many a time. To bad that speech never happened, but Crockett was a real hero just the same.
Ahh, Davey, Davey crockett, King of the wild frontier!
In some aspects, Crockett was the original Tea party congressman who wanted to go to Washington to change things.
Then he ran up against President Andrew Jackson’s political machine. He crossed Jackson, and Jackson spread out his money to get him defeated in the next congressional elections.
Crockett lost his re-election bid, and moved farther west.
He eventually ended up in Texas, with the hopes of helping some Texans find the freedom he felt was lost back East.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
We know how Crockett’s story ended, any guesses on how ours will?
