Does The Orthodox Presbyterian Church use the Crucifix?
The Orthodox Presbyterian Church ^

Posted on 08/05/2013 10:31:02 AM PDT by Gamecock

Question:

Does the OPC use the crucifix in the church? If not, are they opposed to it?

Answer:

Thank you for your question. The answer is, so far as I know, the crucifix is not used in OPC churches, and here is why:

1.The Second Commandment (Ex. 20:4-6 and Deut. 5:8-10) forbids any picture or image of God, and that would include the Son of God, even as man. At any rate we do not know what Jesus looked like as there is no physical description of him.

2.The crucifix will always end up being an object of worship—regarded as holy. History teaches as much. The bronze serpent Moses made became an object of worship and was not destroyed till King Hezekiah did it (Numbers 21:9; 2 Kings 18:1-5). Roman Catholics have worshipped it, kissed it and held it to have mystical powers.

3.Christ did not remain on the Cross. In the Roman Church Christ is said to be resacrificed each time the Mass is celebrated. This is heresy; he died once for all—Hebrews 9:25-28.

We in the OPC have learned not to trust our idolatry prone hearts not to do the same as others have in the past. Hence, no crucifixes are used. So, yes, we are opposed to it.

I think I'll keep on giving booze a pass.

You are quite within your rights to do so - but please don't try to make everyone feel inferior for their NOT doing so.

Butt out. I see that your head is so wooly, it’s easy to pull it over your eyes.

The practice of not eating meat on Fridays is a discipline - a reminder that Our Lord died on Friday. Since He died for us, we should at least commemorate it in some significant fashion. I don’t know how many Catholics adhere to this pracitce, but I do according to Church dictates. I do not give a s**t about Temple Recommends - you know that - however, I do pay attention to the practices of the Church going back 2000 years to the Acts of the Apostles and the people who knew Jesus Incarnate.

MY bible says ALL will be there!

The "all" in Romans 14:10 and 2 Corinthians 5:10 is not the same "all" in Revelation 20:11-15. The time is different and the place is different. Only saved persons of Christ's bride will appear at His judgment seat. The "all" are the ones to whom the letters were addressed, not the general population.

That's not something I do. It's a thing everyone must do for themselves.

With that statement, it is clear to me that you really don't accept the salvation message that is defined by Paul. There is absolutely nothing you can do that will earn you a crown.

I'm glad your clarity is not that of Paul and Christ. Apparently you have not clarified the doctrines of salvation and sanctification enough to become a judge of it, with your decision final. Christ will judge the conduct of people according to their works, and there will be a differentiation of rewards. Insert here the accounting for the talents apportioned. I'll let Him worry about the crown business.

As a follower, he's given me some things to do with expectations to follow through. One of them is to straighten my act up. If not, I will receive chastsement. As far as denying His rules for the game, failure when it is ones duty and He gives the power, will put one in the penalty box. Confession and repentance are something to think about. He chooses who reigns with Him. There'll be some tears over this.

>> e-s: “Have you ever read the second chapter of John carefully enough to determine what time of the year it was?”

.
>> “Well, one really needs to start with Jesus’ baptism by John Baptizer, in mid-to-late AD 29 (of the 15th year of the reign of Tiberias Caesar, Lk. 3:1” <<

.
No, one need not do that, since the 2nd chapter of John clearly sets out the relationship of the days from the wedding, through his short stay in Capernaum, and the subsequent trip to Jerusalem for the Passover. None of these events are recorded in the other gospels, so your aimless wandering in Luke offers no help to your vapid position.

Your dates are also way off, and there is no excuse for that in this day of computers and information.

Yeshua was born on the High Sabbath of Succot, in the 15th day of the 7th month (Sept 26, 3 BC by the Julian)

He was circumcised on the High Sabbath of The Last Great Day, 22nd day, 7th month (Oct 3, 3 BC by the Julian)

He was baptised on the Sabbath, 20th day, 11th month (Feb 16, 27 AD by the Julian)

His ministry was exactly 70 weeks long (affirming prophecy) ending at Shavuot on the 8th day, 3rd month (June 20, 28 AD by the Julian.

So much for your smoke screen!

You do need much education, yes scripture strongly confirms the time of the Cana wedding as a week before Passover.

Ah, but there are some who DO give a, ahem, care.

They are the ones who want to know why YOUR church removed much of the plain and precious things from the original manuscripts.

Only saved persons of Christ's bride will appear at His judgment seat.

Izzat so?

Exodus 32:32-33
But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written.”  But the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book.

Daniel 12:1
“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.

Philippians 4:3
And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

Revelation 3:5
He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Revelation 13:8
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Revelation 17:8
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Revelation 20:11-15
"Then I saw a great White Throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and THE BOOKS WERE OPENED. Another book was opened WHICH IS THE BOOK OF LIFE. The dead were judged according to their works as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to their works.  Then death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of Fire. The Lake of Fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written IN THE BOOK OF LIFE, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

Revelation 21:27
Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Why even LOOK at the BoL if ONLY 'saved persons' will be there?

It's a thing everyone must do for themselves.

Sorry; but you are incorrect.

John 6:28-29

Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

Bitter much? Better pull out your beads and pray to Mary. Hate for you to spend 10,000 years in purgatory over this.

Tell ya what, I’ll go straight to Jesus for ya!

One of them is to straighten my act up.

In the Book of 2 Samuel 11: 1 ff, we have the story of David and Bathsheba. David was the king. She was wife of Uriah, the Hittite, a soldier in David's armies. David was smitten of her and slept (fornicated) with her, whereby she became pregnant. David placed Uriah at the battle front where he surely would die, and did.

God chose David. God knew David's heart, and life, if you believe in God's eternity. In Acts 13:22, Paul quotes God: 2... God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

Did David do everything God wanted him to do? David lost that son, but do you think God was in error?

In several of your posts, you have hinted that I may not know God. I have news for you. He is my Father, Brother, and Redeemer.

You set yourself as a judge, but you can't even properly divine the Word. You claim scholarship, but cannot even read plain words.

Please know that I will pray for the scales to come off your eyes! Satan has set a trap, and it seems to me that you have stepped right into it. "Pride goeth before a fall", ya' know! Wine can only make you stumble...
