Raise Young to Respect Other Faiths, Pope Says in Message to Muslims
The Catholic Herald (UK) ^ | 8/2/13

Posted on 08/02/2013 8:05:08 PM PDT by marshmallow

Muslims and Christians must raise young people “to think and speak respectfully of other religions and their followers, and to avoid ridiculing or denigrating their convictions and practices”, Pope Francis has said.

In a personal message to the world’s Muslims to mark the end of Ramadan, the Pope said: “Turning to mutual respect in inter-religious relations, especially between Christians and Muslims, we are called to respect the religion of the other, its teachings, its symbols, its values. Particular respect is due to religious leaders and to places of worship. How painful are attacks on one or other of these!

“It is clear that, when we show respect for the religion of our neighbours or when we offer them our good wishes on the occasion of a religious celebration, we simply seek to share their joy, without making reference to the content of their religious convictions.

“Regarding the education of Muslim and Christian youth, we have to bring up our young people to think and speak respectfully of other religions and their followers, and to avoid ridiculing or denigrating their convictions and practices.

“We all know that mutual respect is fundamental in any human relationship, especially among people who profess religious belief. In this way, sincere and lasting friendship can grow.”

I had to change my mind on that per scripture and the rules of this forum. You see, scripture admonishes us to speak out against error and the rules of this forum say we must ping the poster whose post we are discussing. So in order to remain trustworthy to both scripture and the rules of this forum I had to rethink my original desires.

Scripture says I have to speak up.

Titus 1:13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

Titus 2:15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Surely you would want someone who has “seen the light” to obey scripture wouldn’t you?

Now if you can't counter my points just say so.

The absolute only one, God. There can be no other for those who believe.

The thing is that these guys are not even real Protestants. Just dig deeper and you'll find that many don't believe in the Triune nature of God, there are clowns who are unitarians, count-your Jehovah's Witnesses and then quite a few Modalists

Don't call them Protestants, just kooks -- they belong in their own kirk of one.. and they don't want God in it...

ebb tide: he said “respect the religion of the other” implying reciprocity. Do you respect the teachings and values of Islam? Yes or No?

Respecting the religion does not imply respecting the teachings and values -- it denotes respecting the rights of the other TO their religion, whatever that may be

Now we Christians DO that -- Moslems if they want to believe what they want, we say ok, we think you're wrong, but that's your choice

Moslems on the other hand say "believe in allah, the illah of peace or we keel you"

The Pope made his remarks to the Moslems at the end of Ramzan -- it is clearly directed to THEM to respect Christians in the ME.

What part of "The Pope made his remarks to the Moslems at the end of Ramzan " do you not understand CB?

If he said it at Christmas, that's a different thing, but this was directed AT Moslems at the end of their big fasting period

We are commanded, simply, to teach all nations, presumably with sound and uncompromised doctrine, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Anything beyond this is mere vanity, hoping to conquer through a cultural Christianity which has no substance or power.

A friend of mines grandfather was a mule skinner (A person that trains mules not actually skins them) in Iowa. On a visit to his home I asked him what the trick was to harness training them. He answered with a bit of a twinkle in his eye; "The first thing you need to do is get the 2X4."

In general Muslims have entirely different view of God and life than we do. As long as they feel that they can continue to use violence to subjugate anyone they consider infidels they will continue to do so.

Except he actually included teachings, etc:

Turning to mutual respect in inter-religious relations, especially between Christians and Muslims, we are called to respect the religion of the other, its teachings, its symbols, its values.

>>this was directed AT Moslems at the end of their big fasting period<<

Yeah, yeah, so here’s what he told the Muslims. Maybe this will make it easier for you.

Muslims and Christians must raise young people “to think and speak respectfully of other religions and their followers, and to avoid ridiculing or denigrating their convictions and practices”, Pope Francis has said.

This was directed AT Moslems at the end of their big fasting period. I got that part.

By the way. I’m not sure how it would have changed anything if he said it at Christmas. :-)

Do you even read my posts? Why do you continue to put me on the list when, if you read my posts, you would see that I agree with you?

You’re annoying me.

I simply included you because you were including in the pings of the poster I was responding to. I generally do that because it gives the recipients a chance to see my response. I understand that you agree with me. Just thought I would keep you in the loop. I’ll try to remember to not include you in the future.

Cronos said, "Respecting the religion does not imply respecting the teachings and values.

Nope! That's not what the Pope said. One more time, read slowly and read carefully. The pope, not only implied, he said this:

“Turning to mutual respect in inter-religious relations, especially between Christians and Muslims, we are called to respect the religion of the other, its teachings, its symbols, its values.
