ick Warrens son has taken his own life. Matthew Warren, 27, had struggled with mental illness before his death.
Evangelist Greg Laurie posted an e-mail the Saddleback Church pastor sent to this staff: Only those closest knew that he (Matthew) struggled from birth with mental illness, dark holes of depression, and even suicidal thoughts. In spite of Americas best doctors, meds, counselors, and prayers for healing, the torture of mental illness never subsided. Today, after a fun evening together with Kay and me, in a momentary wave of despair at his home, he took his life. Click here to read a prayer request Rick Warren e-mailed to his staff.
Prayers and condolences are flooding into Warrens Facebook page. And Laurie also expressed his heartfelt pain over Warrens loss.

You’re not confessing sin for salvation. For your spiritual self. You’re confessing sin so you won’t get sick? Dude... are you serious? Answer my question... why wasn’t the Apostle Paul healed of his infirmity? He could heal others. He worked miracles. He was with the other apostles who healed others and worked miracles. Yet he suffered “sickness” his entire life. Why?
>> “Nothing compares to the earth-shattering heartbreak of losing a child.” <<
.
Let’s hope that this leads them to Yeshua.
>> “Youre confessing sin so you wont get sick?” <<
.
No, you’re already sick. Confess and repent to be healed!
Sin brings disease, and will do so until we either die, or Yeshua returns, and “we know as we are known.”
We all pray for good health. But we also (well most of us) realize that our physical self, our physical fallen self will not be restored until God raises us physically anew.
>> “ why wasnt the Apostle Paul healed of his infirmity?” <<
.
You’ll have to read Romans 7 again for the answer to that question.
So when do you plan on answering my question about Paul? It’s a simple question. Why wasn’t he healed of his affirmity?
Since you know it.. go ahead and tell me...
>> “But we also (well most of us) realize that our physical self, our physical fallen self will not be restored until God raises us physically anew.” <<
Stop the apples and oranges stuff!
Our sin nature will remain until we are made incorruptible, but our physical health is dependant on daily sanctification for that very reason.
“People who kill themselves are either in pain or terribly self-focused”
I am going to take Very much in pain for $500.
In fact mental illness like this goes so far down the rabbit hole that I don’t think it ever reaches the bottom with out hitting death in some cases.
To make matters worse the drugs they use to treat it often just make the person worse rather than better. I really don’t like anti depressent drugs and the way some docs pass them out like Pez. Yes I agree there are some that need medical treatment and we just can’t say to these people “you need Jesus” yes they need Jesus but they also need medial treatment in some cases. Mental illness is not cut and dry, and if not handled correctly you get what we have here.
You know... I apologize if I’ve argued to “aggressively”. You have a nice evening... We’ll have to agree to disagree on the topic. Take it easy!
How do you know that he wasn't talking to him about Jesus? Really, this condemnation of a man who has just lost a child and whose soul we really cannot know is very distasteful. It would be distasteful even if it happened to an atheist.
I’d much rather find a way to get you to see what I see (not to win an argument).
You're being awfully harsh on people who were damaged by childhood abuse, severe trauma in adulthood such as rape or beatings, or are combat veterans, for just three examples off the top of my head. It's easier to convince people that God's love is the answer if you demonstrate it, rather than sound like the Church Lady.

But that abuse is part of the problem; it leads to self hatred, which leads to so-called autoimmune diseases, which are healed by confessing that self hatred and it’s cause.
If we want his healing we have to do it his way; roll your own just doesn’t work.
could very well be.
This is what FR has become. It was always like that a little bit, but no more than you see it in the general population.
One of these days I'm going to post a thread entitled,
"Church-going Homosexual With Schizophrenia Who Stopped Taking His Zyprexa & Abilify Wants Forgiveness & Salvation, But He Thinks He's God. What Should I Tell Him?!"
Then I'm gonna go pop some popcorn.
Evangmlw-—thanks for a reasoned and articulate post. I agree with you that we are both physical and spiritual beings, and that prayer can heal. I also believe that God gave us medical healers ( many of whom are good and faithful Christians who have been blessed with gifts from God). Many of the modern medicines originally came from natural plants, etc in our environment.
Addiction is one area where spirituality is a definite need for healing. Medical attention may help, but the individual rarely can overcome this illness without turning to God for help. Even the psychiatrist, Carl Jung commented to one suffering addict, that in these extreme cases “only a spiritual intervention can help.”
You are so right....the family is very effected and often become “ill” with exhaustion, stress, or physical problems themselves. Autism and alzheimer’s is are also physical illness that affect the social and family areas.
It is cruel to somehow tell these families that it is their inadequacy that contributes when they are really struggling with a difficult family problem.
You are wicked! ha. LOL!
I often post my response to a) support those who are struggling with mental illness b) have a balanced discussion
I firmly believe that illnesses can benefit from BOTH medical help AND prayer.
We don't know what was in his mind as he breathed his last. He could have repented of his action, though it was too late to do anything about it.
I am of the belief that those who decide to take their own lives are not working with their full faculties, therefore I don't believe God would damn them fully for their actions. I believe in the idea of Purgatory, because I believe in a Merciful God. Some, at death, are not in full communion with the Lord, and are not prepared to look upon Him in His Glory. We, who still live, are encouraged to pray for those who might be in that state, needing to be cleansed of some minor sins, or even some major ones for which they hadn't fully repented. We pray for them to be cleansed so that they can, at last, be welcomed into the sight of God, and be able to look on Him.
