VATICAN CITY, March 13, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) While Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was Archbishop of Buenos Aires he defended the life of the unborn even in cases of rape, in very stark terms.
In a 2007 speech given to a gathering of priests and laity on October 2nd, then-Cardinal Bergoglio issued a defense of life even in cases of rape saying: "we arent in agreement with the death penalty," but "in Argentina we have the death penalty. A child conceived by the rape of a mentally ill or retarded woman can be condemned to death."
Moreover, on behalf of the bishops of Latin America, also in 2007, Cardinal Bergoglio presented the "Aparecida Document" regarding the situation of the Church in their countries. The document, approved by Pope Benedict XVI in July of that year, made a very clear statement regarding the consequences of supporting abortion, disallowing holy communion for anyone who facilitates an abortion, including politicians.
The text states in paragraph 436 that "we should commit ourselves to eucharistic coherence, that is, we should be conscious that people cannot receive holy communion and at the same time act or speak against the commandments, in particular when abortion, euthanasia, and other serious crimes against life and family are facilitated. This responsibility applies particularly to legislators, governors, and health professionals."
The prelate also denounced a "culture of discarding" regarding the elderly, which treats them as if they are disposable and worthless due to their advanced age.
"In Argentina there is clandestine euthanasia. Social services pay up to a certain point; if you pass it, die, you are very old. Today, elderly people are discarded when, in reality, they are the seat of wisdom of the society," he said, and observed that "the right to life means allowing people to live and not killing, allowing them to grow, to eat, to be educated, to be healed, and to be permitted to die with dignity."
He shares the GOP platform on abortion, Romney came out against it.
Well, he's not going to be elected U.S. Senator from Indiana or Missouri with that attitude.
Only if it’s legitimate rape.
Yup, can’t be a senator without putting your principles up for sale.
“Well, he’s not going to be elected U.S. Senator from Indiana or Missouri with that attitude. “
We sure has hell need one with that attitude. I for one would be willing to give special incentives to rape victims not to abort.

This would include statutory rape and incest? That makes the category someone larger.
The Pope speaks the truth, even when it is difficult to hear.
A baby is a baby is a baby...no matter where, when, or how conceived.
Incentives are harmless. It's trying to FORCE people to have children for rapists which causes demoKKKrats to win national elections.
Agreed. Rape is a horrible thing. To have to carry a pregnancy from it is equally stressful and unexpected, and I’m sure traumatizing.
But it’s STILL not the child’s fault. It’s still a life ....offing the child does not erase the crime.
I pray for these women everywhere ...but I think they are a very small percentage of pregnancies.
To say that prohibiting a procured abortion is the same as "forcing" a woman to have a baby, is like saying prohibiting spousal shooting is "forcing" a man to have a wife.
Any woman who gives the baby a chance to live born from rape has a SPECIAL...a VERY SPECIAL place in HEAVEN for ALL ETERNITY!!
He could if he doesn't go around saying stupid and untrue things like rape victims can't get pregnant...
I’ll buy that.
Unfortunately, when a woman who is raped becomes pregnant because of that, she already has a child. The question now is whether or not to kill the child. If you’re pro-life because the unborn are persons with the right to life, that fact of personhood doesn’t change due to the unfortunate circumstances of conception.
Thanks to these two jay-birds we tossed away two winnable seats plus possibly enough collateral damage to cost us close senate seats in North Dakota, Montana and the presidency.
