Cardinal......Blames Gay Priests for Abuse Scandals Facing Catholic Church [Turkson]

Cardinal Peter Turkson made the comments to an American journalist

He said similar sex scandals would not happen in African churches

Cardinal Turkson is second favourite to take over as Pope

The African cardinal widely tipped to be the first black pope in modern history faced a firestorm of criticism last night after he laid the blame for clerical sex abuse crises at the feet of gay priests.

Cardinal Peter Turkson, who comes from Ghana, told an American journalist that similar sex scandals would never convulse churches in Africa because the culture was inimical to homosexuality.

‘African traditional systems kind of protect or have protected its population against this tendency,’ he told Christiane Amanpour of CCN.

‘Because in several communities, in several cultures in Africa homosexuality or for that matter any affair between two sexes of the same kind, are not countenanced in our society,’ he continued.

‘So that cultural taboo, that tradition has been there,’ said Cardinal Turkson, 64. ‘It has served to keep it out.’

As the head of a major Vatican department – the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace - Cardinal Turkson is ranked as the 5/2 second favourite to take the papal crown when a Conclave of Cardinals meets next month to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, who announced his abdication last week on the grounds of ill health

A statement of the obvious generates big heat.

It used to be the same in western society. The devil has used his time well to undermine societies based around faith in God.

The press finally got something right.

He may be stating the obvious, but that won’t stop anti-Catholics and bitter ex-Catholics from ripping him over these comments— or even just using the opportunity to rip into the Church in general. Seems to be an obsession with some people.

Disagree with his premise. There’s probably just as many gay priests in Africa, but when kids are abused by them, they probably keep their mouths shut for fear of being called gay too (just like happened in this country for many decades). Abuse of children by adults — gay or not — is not new. It’s just that as a society we in the West are no longer willing to sweep it under the rug, and children are encouraged to speak up if someone is being awful to them (in whatever form).

Who else can you blame except maybe the gay Bishops who helped hide them.

My granddaughter teaches third grade at an international school in Ghana. She has freedoms to really teach the children moral issues as well as the academics. One of her students father is a big wig for all of Africa at the UN. Refuses to raise his family in New York.

This should not come as a shock to anyone who has a desire to know the real issues and reasons surrounding these abuse cases. 98% of the abuse was with adolescent boys (12-17). That's not called pedophilia (a psychiatric disorder in persons 16 years of age or older typically characterized by a primary or exclusive sexual interest toward prepubescent children), but rather ephebophilia which is the primary or exclusive adult sexual interest in adolescents.

The condition is almost always associated with homosexuality because it is the adult homosexual who has the sexual interest in the adolescent boy. In the case of abuse by priests, it always involves a gay priest.

What's ironic is that this has been known for a long long time. The Vatican issued a directive back in 1961 forbidding the ordination of any man with a homosexual disorder. It existed before and existed after the directive was given, and even today we continue to ordain men with a homosexual disorder.

It certainly is stating the obvious. My impression is that in the 1960s - 1970s the Catholic Church seminaries became an easy place for homosexuals to ‘hide out’. These folks ‘graduated’ to their offices and preyed on children. I think the Catholic Church was blindsided - but notwithstanding this surprise infestation, their response was slow. Also, in some cases where they sought to cover-up the problem (by transferring known pederasts to unsuspecting parishes), their reaction was criminal.

Naw, they'd just burn down the church with the women and children still inside. No witnesses, no crime...

Cardinal Peter Turkson is very perceptive. However, I’m sure that studies show that he’s mistaken.

Well, I think you could blame parents. Especially the parents who sought compensation rather than justice. And justice for some might be as simple as paying the offending “priest” a visit or notifying his superiors or legal authorities of the incident.

I have always said that if you found a priest who was abusing your child, do not call the diocese, call the sherriff.

And don’t let the diocese talk you out of it.

Lock that pervert up, collar and all.

The simple truth makes liberals scream. Homo men in the church have raped a lot of boys. How shocking. Not.

As a professor at a Catholic seminary in the 70’s I knew of rampant homosexuality among the seminarians. As a liberal UMC pastor with Unitarian leanings, at the time, I was not dismayed. Today I am disgusted at the lack of moral clarity I experienced well into the 80’s.

I think the 80% figure is more accurate. That correlates with the church's own investigations. but the main point is sound--this was mostly not child sex abuse by pedophiles, this was mostly homosexuals grooming adolescents under their influence.

Well, I guess the media will cross Turkson off its list of allowable Papal candidates now. Maybe he’s not the ecclesiastical Obama they were looking for ... LOL.
