There’s probably not an easy answer to this question. There seems to be a tendency toward legalism in some Christian churches (not to say that a “do as you please” attitude is to be desired either). The “world” is too much with us, too, and regular Bible study would likely help that and the worry that goes with it.

I haven't read the wicki piece, but I don't agree with the title.

It can ALSO be asked about some nations with weird religious practices; why do more Catholic people in Brazil flagelate themselves than in the Philippines on certain holidays.

Throwing the word "Christian" into a mix just ever so subtly re-engineers some thought processes.

First, about the Muslim countries. There’s a teaching in hadits (Mohammad’s wisdom, lower than Quran but is also referred) that the sin that Allah hates the most is suicide. This alone puts some break on suicidal intention. That social control and integration are stronger in this countries also reduce the rate (the same argument was used by Emile Durkheim in his famous book on suicide). He further argued that in some countries people where integration is low, people suffer from anomie. They’re not sure what values to follow.

Second, Christian values are not necessarily practiced in those Christian countries. Some form of existentialism that is close to nihilism is quite strong. Without any meaning in this world, why should one continue to live?

Third, in some countries like S. Korea, pressure from expectations leave people stressed out if those expectations are not met. With achievement is connected with pride, no achievement means living in shame. Taking own life is one way to escape.

Almost all Muslim countries have total government control of the press and police so most numbers they report about anything are as reliable as Democrat polls.

And I was even more surprised that the Moslem countries are at the bottom of the list.

Because it's hard to kill yourself jumping out of a tent?

I think Western culture is “riskier” than a lot of Eastern cultures when it comes to suicide. We tend to focus on individual worth and achievement, whereas other cultures might be more group- and family-oriented—maintaining your family or community’s good name is more important than your worth and effectiveness as an individual. Westerners are more socially isolated, and an unfortunate side effect of achievement- and merit-based culture is that there isn’t much hope—not on secular grounds, anyway—for those who chronically fail to find their place. Religion and spirituality can rebut thoughts of being worthless and not belonging on this earth—and research has shown that religious people are less likely to commit suicide than non-religious people are—but until you’ve suffered from true depression, you don’t know how moods, emotions and discouraging beliefs can override rational thoughts. When you’re in that much pain, you want it to end NOW, not in however many years it might take you to figure out why God put you here.

Wikipedia is hardly an unbiased source of such info.

If you want to find the weight of the largest bluefin tuna ever caught its fine but its useless for political and ideological questions.

Why should someone in a Muslim country commit suicide? Their life is already a living death. Esp. if they are female or in any way a free thinker.

Unless they are going to claim the 72 virgins/get into heaven free card, I don’t see the point.

I had a friend who is a psychiatrist in Sweden who worked for a year in the Artctic region of Norway and he said he was paid more than double the salary because the suicide rate was so high they couldn’t talk people into moving there. His reasoning was because the lack of vitamin D from almost no sunshine for six months of the year. Their biggest treatment was high powered lamps that artificially replicated sunlight. He had also worked in Siberia and used the same treatment.

Funny enough, he moved to Malta to live in the sun.

(forgive the run on sentences, I am just now drinking first cup of coffee).

Reporting in third world/Muslin countries is hardly reliable. As someone reported above, look at the practices in Russia, where they report what they want on a death certificate. Another example is the reporting of infant deaths in the US vs other countries. They try to make it look like were substandard when in actuality, we’re the best. Many other countries don’t count stillborn or babies who live only temporarily while we typically do all we can to save a life. Like they say, there’s lies, damn lies and statistics.

What do we forget the christian's supernatural co-existing realm?

Remember we are admonished to look out for things in our own lives.

Just by name only Christian is not the end all of everything being in a perfect state with God it is an action word. Remember these verses are addressed to Christians for their own good so when we forget these suicide horrors happen.

Eph 6:16 “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the FIERY DARTS of the wicked.”

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter 5:8

The Bible says: 1Th 5:17 “Pray without ceasing

Put on the WHOLE ARMOR of GOD

Eph 6:10 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].

Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Eph 6:19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel…”@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@Please Remember this is an action word verses for believers!

Philippians 4:6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

WILL GUARD Your HEARTS and your MINDs in CHRIST JESUS!!!!

What Does this by what?

PRAYERS and PETITIONS!!!

Reread until it finally mediates into true form for real living.

Remember he already is Decieving the non- christians.

Do Daily Devotionals. Read Scripture. Watch services on tv or hear on radio.

I have Sky Angel Tv. I watch EWTN or other Christian tv. We need our daily spiritual nourishment.

People commit suicide because of lack of direction and purpose in life. Sometimes they may have a mental problem. Very few will hang themselves because they love God.
