MILAN (Reuters) - Pope Benedict got no rest on Sunday from a leaks scandal when an Italian newspaper published documents showing that his butler was not the only person in possession of confidential correspondence indicating a Vatican in disarray.
Benedict, 85, ended a weekend trip to Italy's industrial and financial capital Milan with a closing mass for an international gathering in which he praised traditional Catholic family values and re-stated his opposition to gay marriage.
But in its Sunday edition, the Rome newspaper La Repubblica published documents it said it had received anonymously after the arrest of the pope's butler on May 23.
A note received by the newspaper said there were "hundreds more" documents and that the butler, Paolo Gabriele, was just a scapegoat.
The furore over the leaked correspondence, which shows power-hungry cardinals and scheming within the walls of the city state, has gripped the Vatican just as it was recovering from a long-running scandal over sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests in the United States, Ireland and other countries.
One letter, dated January 16, was sent by Cardinal Raymond Burke, an American who heads a Vatican department, to the pope's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.
Burke complains that a decision regarding a liturgical matter was taken without consulting his office, which is responsible for such matters.
The person who sent Repubblica the documents also provided two letters signed by the pope's private secretary, Monsignor Georg Ganswein. The newspaper said those letters had everything but the letterhead and the signature whited out.
The newspaper said that in the note accompanying the documents, the person who sent them said the contents had been whited out "so as not to offend the Holy Father" but threatened to reveal the contents.

From Mark Mallett's blog:
THE ATTACKS
In the dream, St. John Bosco recounts:
The battle rages ever more furious. Beaked prows ram the flagship again and again, but to no avail, as, unscathed and undaunted, it keeps on its course. —Catholic Prophecy, Sean Patrick Bloomfield, P.58
Nothing could be truer as, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the course of the Church has been steadfast in these turbulent days. Nothing, says Pope Benedict XVI, will deter the truth.
The Church intends to continue to raise her voice in defense of mankind, even when policies of States and the majority of public opinion moves in the opposite direction. Truth, indeed, draws strength from itself and not from the amount of consent it arouses. POPE BENEDICT XVI, Vatican, March 20, 2006
Please pray for Pope Benedict!
Whatever “disarray” the Vatican is in, it’s nothing compared to the disarray in the Ubama/Demcocrat/Cloward-Piven complex.
The furore over the leaked correspondence, which shows power-hungry cardinals and scheming within the walls of the city state, has gripped the Vatican just as it was recovering from a long-running scandal over sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests in the United States, Ireland and other countries.
I’m praying for a reversal of the Vatican II Heresy.
What heresy did Vatican II promulgate?
The press is trying their best to suggest that this is a “Vatican leaks” scandal, and that Pope Benedict is unable to control anything.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. From what little I’ve actually seen, as in this briefly mentioned letter from Cardinal Burke concerning misbehavior by Cardinal Bertone, it is the faithful members of the Church finally making an effort to expose the heretics and dissidents.
My God! A cardinal wrote he was upset a decision was made that he thought he should have input on. Its a scandal!!!! The Vatican is in turmoil!!!

Vatican II, from A to Z. With special emphasis on the letters:
H - E - R - E - S - Y
Seriously, one attempt at your answer:
The Principal Errors of Vatican II
This document exposes the heresies (and other errors) found in following documents of Vatican II (or at least those statements which can be given a heretical interpretation):
(These are the documents where the heresies are found)
Unitatis Reintegratio - the Decree on Ecumenism
Orientalium ecclesiarum - the Decree on Eastern Catholic Churches
Lumen Gentium - Constitution on the Church
Dignitatis Humanae - Declaration on Religious Liberty
Ad Gentes - Decree on Missionary Activity
Nostra Aetate - Decree on Non-Christian Religions
Sacrosanctum Concilum - Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy
Gaudium et Spes - Constitution on the Church in the Modern World
Well...I reckon the butler really did do it.
A million people from all over the world attend a mass celebrated by the pope at the World Meeting Of Families, and this is the news headline?
Imagine if Obama spoke to a million people. Imagine if 1,000 people met in support of same sex marriage. What would the headline be?
Don’t forget that in his very first address, the Pope asked us to pray that he would have courage and not run when he saw the wolves coming. I guess he knw what was out there.
Prayers for him!
Your website contains deliberate misreading and misrepresentations of the Council documents.
I read only the first 3 paragraphs to see the game of telephone it play with what the council documents actually say.
If you read the documents with bias, you wont know what it is they actually say.
Schemers and slanderers are the worst enemies of Christ.
What an amazingly confused pile of trash at the end of your link! You don’t actually believe all that nonsense, do you?
PREAMBLE
1. The Catholic Church holds in high esteem the institutions, liturgical rites, ecclesiastical traditions and the established standards of the Christian life of the Eastern Churches, for in them, distinguished as they are for their venerable antiquity, there remains conspicuous the tradition that has been handed down from the Apostles through the Fathers (1) and that forms part of the divinely revealed and undivided heritage of the universal Church. This Sacred Ecumenical Council, therefore, in its care for the Eastern Churches which bear living witness to this tradition, in order that they may flourish and with new apostolic vigor execute the task entrusted to them, has determined to lay down a number of principles, in addition to those which refer to the universal Church; all else is remitted to the care of the Eastern synods and of the Holy See.
You have touched a very personal and extremely sensitive nerve with me, here. Please specify the purported heresy of which you accuse this promulgated decree, with specifics!
The site is maintained by Mr. Laurie Myers, Charles M. Hammer and Anthony Malleus. We also have a number of other lay apologists who contribute their time and knowledge in answering emails and writing articles. ref.
No mention of degrees achieved at Catholic institutions of higher education. Any one of us who does apologetics here in the forum, would qualify - but not by their errant standards. Bogus arguments provided by radical thinkers.
My advice to Steve would be to read the documents and come to his own understanding. All the V2 documents translated into English can be had in soft cover for about $40. I dont find them all that interesting as far as reading is concerned but they are readable. And, yes, I’ve had to read most of them now entering my 6th year of formation for the diaconate ( permanent).
Ping!
God bless you on this journey! We have another deacon in the group as well as another freeper who is in the seminary. Thank you for the post and ping.
At this point in time, that would only happen in his dreams. Even in 2007/2008, the crowds he attracted didn't come close to one million. Plus, he has decided to jump off the same-sex marriage cliff. No matter what people say in polls, when it comes to the ballot, recent elections have shown that most people aren't willing to redefine marriage.
