We were there in January. They have started removing paint and such to reveal the beautiful paintings underneath. There is one of the Maddonna and Child that is beautiful. Hope they don’t re-cover it.

it was converted into a mosque in 1452. In 1920 it was made into a museum by Kemal Ataturk.
Plus also if my memory is correct, the rules are very strict in regards to NOT even doing any form of prayers at all in Hagia Sophia.

But what would the *world community* say about such a thing? Nothing as usual. The *world community* is only outraged when the United States or Israel does something to stand up for themselves. And just who is the *world community*? Why the United Nations of course. The UN is the world’s consensus building organization and of course it is dominated by 57 muslim countries representing a billion people and a lot of the worlds oil. Oh, so that’s why the *world community* is so anti USA and Israel.
I took a close look at the images and saw that they were mosaic, not paintings. That is probably why there are still parts of the images left on the walls. The muzzies probably got tired of chipping off the mosaics one by one. Don’t know which would be harder work—putting up the mosaics or scrapping them off.
I believe that Hagia Sophia was the last place where the Christians took refuge when the barbarian moslems took the city. The Christians were slaughtered, men, women and children, young and old in the cathedral. So much for respect for the people of the book.
