A day after the House Budget Committee voted 21-9 to approve a budget plan proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) renewed its criticism of the plan and urged members of the House of Representatives to put a circle of protection around three essential programs.
The entire House is scheduled to vote on Ryans Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act on May 10.
I reiterate our strong opposition to an unfair proposal that would alter the Child Tax Credit to exclude children of hard-working, immigrant families, wrote Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, chairman of the USCCBs Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development. Denying the credit to children of working poor immigrant families--the large majority of whom are American citizens--would hurt vulnerable kids, increase poverty, and would not advance the common good.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps), provides vital food security to families during tough economic times, Bishop Blaire added. It is estimated that cuts proposed in this bill would deny assistance to two million families, and cut the benefit for everyone else. No poor family that receives food assistance would be unaffected, constituting a direct threat to their human dignity.

Guess I will have to dust off my copy of the Catechism and see where it talks about essential government programs...
Butt out Bishops!
Socialist/Communist government murdered more than 100 million of their own citizens in the past hundred years, but I guess the bishops don’t consider that to be too high a number.
Maybe the Bishops should address how it is “moral” to use the coercive power of the state to extract wealth from one bunch of people in order to give it to another.
Robbing Peter to pay Paul, Bishop?
Charity is supposed to come from the heart, not armed government coercion.
Just some left wing lunatics who make me want to puke.
Pious b@#*^%^s who apparently think the high moral ground is to steal money from working people and hand it out to loafers, druggies, pimps and whores just to scrape up a few votes.
Ryan’s plan must be a good one if the Catholic Bishops are holy-kincker knotted.
And Bishops....is it not the Churchs’ duty to take care of the poor and widowed??? Step up and start acting like Christ wants you to. Care for the poor with the money that is tithed to you. Encourage your congregation to care for those less fortunate...but why put the burden on the government???
What's that? You would have enough left to build another cathedral? Tsk, tsk.
You are ignoring the difference between the freedom of religion established by the Constitution and the freedom of worship advocated by communists governments and the Obama administration.
Freedom of religion ensures that religious institutions can actively participate in the public discourse on a peer basis with any other secular organizations. We have a freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. The Catholic bishops have every bit as much right, representing the countries 64+ million Catholics, to advocate for policies and priorities in line with the Church's values as any political party, union, PAC or pact.
or something like that.
I am a Catholic, but the Bishops’ desire for social justice is what brought us Obamacare. How is that one working out for you, bishops?
I am a bit of a loss to understand... Catholic bishops act all indignant at Obama’s birth control/abortion pill mandate, then demand government provide MORE food stamps??? Isn’t there something in the Holy Bible about serving two masters? You can’t have it both ways bishops.

There would be fewer poor if the GOP and Democrats spent more time putting Americans to work instead of exporting their jobs to the rest of the world.
Forgive me friend, but I have see to many false flag operations. I expect a “compromise” in October letting parts of the Catholic church not follow the mandate, and a surge of Catholics supporting Obama.
I sure wish the bisops would supply us all with their backgrounds in economic training?
As Paul Ryan has already pointed out...he believes in his plan BECAUSE he cares about the poor.
Maybe the Bishops should ponder why these programs are in such sad straits. FRAUD.
