Jimmy Carter Breaks Ranks With Dems on Abortion
The Christian Diarist ^ | March 30, 2012 | JP

Posted on 03/30/2012 8:04:30 AM PDT by CHRISTIAN DIARIST

Jimmy Carter was on Laura Ingraham’s nationally-syndicated radio show yesterday. The former president’s remarks on abortion must have given the Democrat Party establishment heartburn.

“I never have believed that Jesus Christ would approve of abortions,” said Carter, the former Nobel Peace Prize winner. “That was one of the problems I had when I was president – having to uphold Roe v. Wade.”

Carter told Ingraham that he actually has signed a public letter urging fellow Democrats attending the party’s national convention this upcoming September to adopt a new position on abortion – that it be limited “only to women whose (lives) are in danger or who are pregnant as a result or rape or incest.”

Of course, the former president’s recommendation will not go over well with such Democrat Party leaders as President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, all of whom support abortion-on-demand; all of whom have sold their souls to the “abortion rights” lobby, which is complicit in the yearly slaughter of more than one million unborn babies.

Yet, the party of Obama, Reid and Pelosi is not monolithic. Not every Democrat has sworn allegiance to Planned Parenthood, NARAL-Pro Choice and the rest of the abortion industrial complex.

In fact, a third of Democrats are pro-life, like Carter. And those pro-life Dems agree with former president Carter that “a lot of people are estranged from our party because of the abortion issue.”

The reason we haven’t heard more about pro-life Dems – as opposed to practically every other minority constituency within the party – is because the party establishment has gone to great lengths to quash their dissent, in the name of “party discipline.”

But pro-life Democrats are increasingly making their voices heard, their presence felt, notwithstanding the intolerance of their party leadership.

In fact, they have an organization, Democrats for Life of America, which takes a position on abortion diametrically opposed to the party platform on which Obama will be running for re-election this fall.

Like the majority of Americans, pro-life Dems support laws requiring doctors to inform patients about abortion risks, requiring women seeking an abortion to be shown an ultrasound image of her unborn child, prohibiting federal funding of abortion clinics, and allowing pharmacists and health care providers to opt out of providing medicine or medical procedures that result in abortion.

“I see Democrats being more open” to pro-life positions, Democrats for Life Executive Director Kristen Day told the National Catholic Reporter. Meanwhile, she said, “The pro-choice litmus tests are decreasing.”

We’ll see if the party of Obama, Pelosi and Reid seizes the opportunity to redefine its extremist position on abortion when it convenes in Charlotte, N.C. six months from now.

Will the Dems heed Carter’s conscientious call for the party to abandon its longstanding support for abortion, which the majority of Americans consider murder? Or will the party reaffirm its support for abortion-on-demand, a death sentence for more than a million unborn children every year.

Wonder if President Obama’s views on abortion are “evolving,” like his views on same sex marriage.

You can’t be Pro-Life and a Democrat. No way. It’s the heart and soul, the big lynch pin, the Holy Sacrament of the Democrat Party.

I am amazed that there are so many “D” people that still insist they’re Pro-Life. You can’t be! You’re hypocrites!

“...or who are pregnant as a result or rape or incest.”

Sorry but he doesn't get it at all... you cannot be against abortion and have an exception for rape or incest... if you truly understood why you are against abortion in the first place then there is no difference as to the circumstances of the conception... the child in question has done nothing wrong... we do not execute children for the sins of their fathers.

“I never have believed that Jesus Christ would approve of abortions,” said Carter ...

I suspect Jimmy is beginning to realize that God is going to hold him accountable one of these days .... and due to his advancing age, it will be sooner rather than later.

When Carter was president he was strongly pro-abortion. He regularly sought the support of pro-abortion groups and the number of abortions increased during his presidency.

The Carter Administration fought all parental notification laws and all restrictions on late term abortions.

This pronouncement 30 some years later is nothing but hypocrisy.

I am glad to hear that, but somehow I doubt his sincerity since Carter supported and/or placed many rabid pro-abortionists in positions of power while he was president and has continued to support rabid pro-abortion politicians to this day. He named Bella Abzug, a flaming liberal feminist as the head of the Women's Conference while he was president. He continues to support Obama who is as anti-life as you can get.

Yes, this is true. Not every Democrat supports abortion. However, what I have found to be true more often than not is that their views toward the sanctity of human life means very little. They may give it lip service, but they will vote for their party anyway.

Jimma trying to prove to Dem conservatives/christians that he's still a "good guy".

My guess is that he's getting blasted lately for printing his new Bible in which he condones gay marriage.

Lying piece of slime.

Carter’s judicial nominees were all subjected to a litmus test—asked directly where they stood on abortion.

Carter’s Public Liaison was: SARAH WEDDINGTON. I knew the President of Missouri Citizens for Life, who wrote Weddington a letter each and every month Carter was in office, requesting a meeting with Carter. Not one of the 48 letters was acknowledged.

Abortion represents the core values of the Democratic Party, and its plans for the future. In time those core values will determine the party’s plans for old people. That may be what caused the geriatric Jew hater to speak out.

That, or the realization of where he is on his path through life and how close he is to what's coming next.

Kinda sounds like a man practicing what he's going to say when he gets to the gate.

With great power comes great responsibility; may God have mercy on your soul, Mr. President.
